The Ruined Maid BY THOMAS HARDY
"O 'Melia, my dear, this does everything crown! Who could have supposed I should meet you in Town? And whence such fair garments, such prosperi-ty?" — "O didn't you know I'd been ruined?" said she.
— "You left us in tatters, without shoes or socks, Tired of digging potatoes, and spudding up docks; And now you've gay bracelets and bright feathers three!" — "Yes: that's how we dress when we're ruined," said she.
— "At home in the barton you said thee' and thou,' And thik oon,' and theäs oon,' and t'other'; but now Your talking quite fits 'ee for high compa-ny!" — "Some polish is gained with one's ruin," said she.
— "Your hands were like paws then, your face blue and bleak But now I'm bewitched by your delicate cheek, And your little gloves fit as on any la-dy!" — "We never do work when we're ruined," said she.
— "You used to call home-life a hag-ridden dream, And you'd sigh, and you'd sock; but at present you seem To know not of megrims or melancho-ly!" — "True. One's pretty lively when ruined," said she.
— "I wish I had feathers, a fine sweeping gown, And a delicate face, and could strut about Town!" — "My dear — a raw country girl, such as you be, Cannot quite expect that. You ain't ruined," said she.

I suppose at the end of the day it's why most women find themselves a husband. For companionship and commitment? What does that have to do with the sex industry?

Many sex workers choose the profession. I think many is probably a stretch TBH. Van knows one. That's the evidence base.

The less grubby escort agencies recruit girls all the time. They go of their own free will.

Yeah, but as a proportion of the market, that's pretty small and I would imagine that quite a few of them had habits to support.

Also you need to update your stereotypes - the sex industry is widely varied: www.google.com.au/amp/s/www.bbc.com/news/blogs-trending-32165949.amp“ College student. Aspiring lawyer. Activist. Daughter, sister, sex worker. I don't need rescuing." These are the kinds of statements that hundreds of Australian sex workers are making about themselves using the #facesofprostitution hashtag. ” Plenty of women willingly sign up to it (Sugar sites are increasingly popular with uni sites) because it’s flexible and pays well.

There was a minor scandal a few years ago when it turned out that a few page 3 girls were hoorin' themselves oot. Some were almost household names. Not that I have a problem with tarts hoorin' themselves oot.

Oh do grow up. A few trendy tarts doesn't detract from the miserable mass of exploited, dependent, vulnerable wretches.

Your reality's a bit warped mate. Times have changed. Sure there are those exploited, dependent, vulnerable wretches you mention but the other group is much larger than you think. Girls are growing out of the victim mentality and sex is no longer regarded as some sort of Victorian error limited to the debased among us.

Oh, I'm no prude. I find prostitution as it is usually carried on to be a squalid reflection on our society and a rebuke to our ideas of decency and compassion. It does make life me queasy to hear people trying to justify the mass abuse of other people by using the example of a very fee that have chosen to make the most of their situation.
I suppose I feel a little bit the same about poor kids who allow themselves to be brain damaged for other people's enjoyment in the boxing ring.

You may be right that I don't have much first hand experience. I've seen what I've seen and I've been in a few knocking shops in my time. Never, ever, would it have crossed my mind to participate nor would I knowingly be in the company of people who would.

I'd never dream of entering a knocking shop so your view's clearly more valid than mine.

Well, it's been some time. Usually the sort of bar that you sometimes end up in and you only twig when you notice the number of unattached women, if you notice at all.
I had a good mate at school who joined the army after school. He went straight to Sandhurst and I went to uni. We met up after he'd been posted and he told me how going to the local "eros centre" was almost de rigeur for subalterns. Not only had he paid for sex but he did her up the wrong 'un.
I rather went off the bloke.

Because patronising black people's a sly way of insulting them, a way of saying you're better than them and will support them/look after them because they're lesser beings.

If it were you would not get bipartisan comments from the likes of AOC and Trump Jnr. It’s Yanks being Yanks and many incorrectly assuming that means she won’t be able to compete at all (and she is a strong favourite behind Shelly Ann Fraser.) If she was a sh*t runner nobody would be saying anything. Incidentally she has been completely chill about her ban and just said “I’m human.”
