Just a second. She got a masters, not a PhD. Given how many PhDs there are, and how few jobs there are looking at the active volcanoes of Britain, it wouldn’t surprise me that she’s going to find it hard to get a gig regardless of anything.

Her disability's going to make her a less attractive proposition; fact of life.

She has got a PhD, it says in the article.
The caption to her pic is surely a piss-take though.
"Dr Jazmin Scarlett has struggled to find a footing in academia, despite her qualifications"

Awkward. An employer cannot say an applicant's disability is a minus, despite said disability being likely to cause problems. I know it's a bastard but that's life.
As for skin colour, the greatest risk there is that you'll employ someone who uses it as a passive/aggressive lever to gain advantage, so potentially disruptive if a minority.

She has got a PhD, it says in the article. Fair enough. I hadn't bothered to read the article. It's weird that they lead with the "distinction in her masters" rather than her PhD. If you were asking me, it implies that the BBC journo has a masters and therefore thinks it's the real badge of distinction.

You get distinctions in Master's but not PhD. That's a just a pass. I agree with you that all BBC staff are horrible whitey-hating communists though.

But surely a masters, distinction or not, is rubbish in comparison to a PhD*.
*Unless your masters is in maths and your PhD is in social science.

Yeah a Master's is one year full time and PhD is 3. And obviously a Master's in something like, say, just at random, Exercise and Health Science is vastly superior to a PhD in BBC and Gender Studies. Mind you, a GCSE in art is better than that.

And pre-1970 A-levels are vastly superior to all of them.

I used to see teachers advertising tutoring in A levels and O levels in phone boxes when I lived in London. Academic lot, Londoners.

took me 2 years to do my maters, but I was working full time and had kids to entertain. Didn't get a distinction mind, just a merit, so same level as I passed my BsN

I also feel sorry for Jazmin Scarlett. Racial prejudice in employment is the norm in the UK.
Add to the fact she is in a field that will have fewer opportunities plus she has a disability (and there is still LOADS of prejudice facing disabled candidates) and it’s not a good position to be in.
She should maybe consider moving somewhere more enlightened like North Korea or Saudi Arabia.
