I do wonder if the refugees in the tent villages have basically got a bit of a break here. It'll be miserable (and has been utterly crappy for years), but when a tent collapses on you (provided you don't have a fire going inside) it's not going to be fatal.

the bit is Syria is held by the rebels so no help getting there easily, seeing the pictures the devastation is massive, the videos of buildings falling down (in their own footprint...) are quite shocking, and on top of that its snowing or near freezing.

Death toll now 4k, expected to go much higher. News said the 1999 quake there killed 19k and it less damage over a smaller area.

Another quake there today, a 6.4 this time, biggest of the 6000 or so aftershocks.
