It's instructive, I suppose, that the Taliban now control just about every part of Afghanistan and yet the US are able to maintain security at Kabul airport and use it at will.

A deals been done, of course. It makes you wonder what other deals could have been done and what deals remain to be done.

Oh deals are getting done for sure, the Taliban just want the Western forces and their civvies gone and won't be doing anything much to stop them cos they know provoking em will bring a heavy slap, though there is probably a disconnect between the commanders and the foot soldiers so you might see the odd bit of low level argi-bargy before its all done. Getting translators jurnos and prominent women out will probably be much more of an issue and I suspect, like in Vietnam and Cambodia, lots who worked with NATO will be left behind to similar fates.

Makes you wonder if this is just another one of those "our turn at the trough" episodes and, in fact liberalism is a commodity that can be bought and that strict interpretation of Islam can be bought off.

Possibly, though Taliban was always focused on Afghanistan rather than an international movement, even though they hosted AQ they were more of an extention of the foreign fighters who had been in Afghanistan in one way or another since the soviet invasion and CIA funding of the Mujahideen.

Yeah, I guessing that their conservatism is more preservatism and that their real interest is in maintaining just enough foreign interest to make a profit.

I just can't believe that they really want to live like cavemen. I suppose the lads in charge never actually do.

The phrase "and their families" is new, but entirely expected, as sure as night follows day. So, this bloke's been able to get special treatment for his mates. Doesn't seem very fair, does it?
