US judge has issued a blistering ruling against prominent lawyers who represented Donald Trump after his 2020 presidential election defeat.

US District Judge Linda Parker described a lawsuit filed in Michigan by Mr Trump's counsel as a "profound abuse of the judicial process".

Her 110-page ruling, issued Wednesday, sanctioned Sidney Powell, Lin Wood and seven others who alleged voter fraud.

Judge Parker said the lawyers intended to undermine the electoral system.

"This case was never about fraud - it was about undermining the people's faith in our democracy and debasing the judicial process to do so," she said in her ruling.

Judge Parker ordered the lawyers to pay the court costs of their opponents - the city of Detroit and the state of Michigan - and undergo 12 hours of legal education.

She also referred them to the Michigan Attorney Grievance Commission and local disciplinary committees where they are licenced.

Don't prosecute the bad things that are really complex and are going to be hard to get a conviction if you already have a real tangible case.

If I'm honest its a bit disappointing this is the first thing he's been charged with, it does look trivial compared to all his other criminality, I know the GOP are trying to silence justice in Georgia, but his attempts to get officials in Georgia to commit election fraud on his behalf, caught on tape, is far more consequential. As is his stealing of top secret documents and keeping them in the shed at his private club, given how many people end up in prison for much less when it comes to mishandling of classified and top secret documents, this looks a lot more serious than a minor campaign funding thing.

oh and inciting a violent mob to insurrection and calling for then end of US democracy should be the first thing they prosecute him for, no idea why the DOJ has dragged its feet on all these things. Criminality with no consequence only invites more criminality.
