It was weird. He seemed broadly decent and sincere but also seemed to still believe - and always believed - in functioning Leninism. He didn’t realize it was a failure and appeared to want its return (not in Stalinist form of course).

Yeah he always came accross as a decent bloke, though never quite accepted why the end of the USSR was step forward.
