"At least six people have been killed and 53 wounded in an explosion in a busy area of central Istanbul, Turkish authorities have said. The blast happened at about 16:20 local time (13:20 GMT) on a shopping street in the Taksim Square area, the Turkish city's governor Ali Yerlikaya said. It is unclear what caused the explosion, which appears to have been captured on social media videos." www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-63615076Nastye.

I wonder what's going on. There are all kinds of possible culprits in Turkey at the moment, including the government, but also lots of people who have been oppressed by the current government. It feels a bit strange for it to be in central Istanbul, though. Taksim Square is more like the kind of place that's most moderate in the country.

It struck me that the BBC were keen to avoid using the words Turkey or Turkeye. It doesn't seem to have been widely adopted. I'm happy with it, but I wonder if there's another agenda at play.

I object to it. Because I’m a reactionary old arse. I don’t like names I’m not used to.

As I've said before, the Turkish call "England" "Ingiltere". Turkiye in English is Turkey. I'm happy for the Turks to call it Turkiye, just like I'm happy for the French to call blighty Royaume Uni. Some places have different names in different languages.
Only in some instances does it become relevant, like crappy racist transliteration like Mumbai, or residual imperial terminology like Kyiv. But Turkey doesn't really fall under either category.

Taksim's the sort of 'middle class' area of Istanbul where a lot of tourists stay. Apparently as mids says, it's the PKK. But it could be just another excuse to smash the Kurds. Mark you, Kurds are troublesome cnuts. We had some as neighbours in north London. Nasty fcukers... well, the blokes were. The women all seemed terrified of them.

I guess it's one of those evolving things: you often hear a Yanks using a hard G in Los Angeles these days (although I suspect that even that is a halfway house to a Hgh sound).

I've said it before and I'll say it again:
Let the Kurds have their Whey!

Wouldn't like to be in her place right now. I knew personally two people who'd been arrested by Istanbul police. Not nice.

I wonder if that's an approved restraint method.
