I see England's social justice league players have crumbled at the slightest of threats and given up wearing the rainbow armbands. Principles? Don't like these ones, I've got others. Pathetic. Not just England's, either. Basically every European country. "I'm such a good ally" "How good" "Well, good-ish, but not enough to risk a yellow card for"

Thesiger's Crossing the Empty Quarter is a great book. The Marsh Arabs by the same author is equally good. More books I gave to someone to read which never came back.

I never read Thesiger because I took against him reading the last parts of Eric Newby's A Short Walk In The Hindu Kush (I assume you've read it?).
Reading that passage again, I think I was probably entirely unfair and should have a go at the Empty Quarter.

Can't remember the passage to which you refer though. It's all very depressing the way politics and war have changed these areas.

Lingo of the day and probably said in jest, I'd say. When I was out that way airbeds were laughed at. I even slept in a storm pipe once.

If I half shut my eyes and turn the sound down, I can pretend that France is Scotland.

I've never been to Qatar or the Gulf countries generally. No interest in doing so. They sound dreadful, but I'm told that Oman is quite pleasant. I’ve just been to UAE and Qatar. Work demanded it. Of the ex-pat places to visit there were definitely worse options.
