"Gary Lineker, Alan Shearer and Micah Richards have branded Uefa’s choice of referee for England’s European Championship semi-final against Netherlands “not a good look” after he was banned for his part in a match-fixing scandal. The trio used their The Rest is Football podcast to speak out against the appointment of Felix Zwayer, who also has history with Jude Bellingham after the midfielder was fined €40,000 for publicly raising the German’s past while playing for Borussia Dortmund." www.telegraph.co.uk/football/2024/07/08/england-vs-netherlands-semi-ref-match-fixing-bellingham/I think you'd have to go a long way to find a neater demonstration of how degenerate and hypocritical football has become. A referee is caught match-fixing and is allowed back into the game at the highest level. Mentioning this attracts punishment. Bloody hell. What a racket. I'll long suspected that sporting authorities fix tournaments for commercial entertainment reasons. I'm beginning to wonder if that's as far-fetched as I thought.

"Thames Valley Police (TVP) said it rejected nearly a fifth more potential officers in the last financial year than it did in the year before. It said there was “change in risk appetite” after cases involving former Metropolitan Police officers Wayne Couzens and David Carrick, both jailed for life last year. It also said the increased rejections could be attributed to “the quality of candidates” applying to join TVP." www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/ckrg4z0gy5yo.amp"change in risk appetite”. Goodness me, what utter helmets.

"Of course. We all know the kind of men attracted to careers in law enforcement ..."
Well, whilst one could argue that there's an element of truth in what you say, the majority of police officers I've known in life have been honourable people doing their best for society, and for all the right reasons too. Good coppers want bent coppers out - it really is as simple as that - and perhaps we, as "consumers" of the service, can help with recruitment, retention and the "wheedling out" process.
Just a thought.

Yes, it used to be like that in the UK, but attitudes toward the police, the advance of social media, peer pressure and increased scrutiny by the public and P&C commissioners alike (amongst other factors) means that things are on the move, and in the right direction too. Will this lead to rapid change? I suspect not - certainly not if Joe Public wants a qualitatively better police service - as time spent on getting things right is time well invested.

Further fun for fightin'-age 'fugees ..... "An asylum seeker who assaulted a female police officer cannot do community service because he cannot speak English and it could be against health and safety rules, a court has heard. Mustafa Al Mbaidin, a 27-year-old Jordanian national, would need a full-time translator with him if he were to do a period of unpaid work, magistrates heard. This could raise “issues” with health and safety at work laws, the court was told. Magistrates heard that Mbaidin drunkenly pestered female joggers running along Bournemouth seafront in Dorset on May 11. He was observed by a CCTV operator, who alerted two nearby police officers. When one officer, Pc Selina Swan, went to arrest him for being drunk and disorderly, he shoved her, hit her on the head with his jacket and told her “f--- you” before running off." So, he speaks some English then? #fuxkthemalloffnow www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2024/07/17/refugee-attack-female-officer-community-service-bournemouth/

If, as Starmer claimed, the refugee/asylum seeker "challenge" can be sorted out by faster processing, then surely this bloke can be said to have already been processed. He can safely be returned back to Jordan, no need to land the aircraft.
Whatever risks he claims to be escaping, they clearly can't have been so bad that he couldn't manage to keep his nose clean in UK.

If he cannot do community service (and this maybe true) - then a custodial sentence seems like a reasonable compromise.
