I agree with every post on this subject...from mids to Andy.
However, I love poetry. I have many books of poetry and read at least one poem a day...well not every day.
The big problem with poetry is that a large proportion (80 per cent?) is absolutely awful.
But the good stuff is sublime.
I love the countryside - there are some fabulous walks around Surrey...and I don't need poetry to enjoy it - nor would I start quoting it in company.
(We did see a black chap the other weekend on Farthing Downs...we thought it a bit odd...he looked lost.)

I think you're confusing racial barriers with physical barriers. But also, you're a rich white man who grew up ruining the landscape by wandering around it in your wellies and Barbour on stag shooting expeditions in the moorlands and highlands, so you already know what it's like to be in the hills and could choose to live somewhere else with that knowledge. Your Peckham dwelling feral child of global majority heritage has never once used his gun to hunt antelope in the wild, and has never even seen a hill so doesn't know he could move to Borrowdale and go walking in the hills every day instead of studying architecture at the Bartlett. That's one of the bleats. The BBC/Guardian types don't distinguish between the two.

I bet he did. I've always thought the opposite. Prison should be very, very austere unless you behave and make genuine efforts at education- either learning or teaching.
"or even incentivised with perks for their cells, Mr Alara said."

The only "perks" allowed should be food, water and oxygen. Maybe sleep, if they've broken enough rocks for the day.

“ The review, by the Office for Standards in Education (Ofsted) and His Majesty’s Inspectorate of Prisons (HMIP), found some children having only half an hour per day out of their cells. That is because many YOIs struggle to deal with children's complex behavioural issues and have to keep them apart.”
People are so short sighted on this. They will bristle at any investment to improve the situation in jails and better readying inmates for the outside world.
But then cry about crime rates. Why is prevention not seen as better than cure?

Too many want prison to be solely about punishment, the harsher the better, they probably think fear is better at stopping reoffending, despite all evidence disproving this approach.

I wouldn’t mind if it proved it reduced reoffending rates. I have no issue with prison as a punishment but we need to work on proper reforming otherwise you just get career criminals which everybody suffers from.

These are the type of people who are coming here. FAMs who trample children to death. Every adult in that boat should be prosecuted, jailed (in France) and on release, sent back to whatever shithole they came from. Anyone refusing to say where they came from should be put into a similar dinghy, towed far out to sea and left there. "n unconfirmed number of people have died, including a child who was 'trampled to death', following two small boat incidents off France. The French interior minister Bruno Retailleau posted on X that 'several people had died'. Local newspaper, La Voix Du Nord, has reported that three people had died off Calais and one near Boulogne, with rescue operations ongoing. Mr Retailleau posted: 'Today several people died trying to cross the Channel. A child was trampled to death in a boat." www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-13927563/Child-migrant-trampled-death-small-boat-die-trying-cross-Channel-terrible-tragedy.html

(But seriously imagine using the death of a child to engage in your xenophobia. Barking.) Seems like a crush and a terrible tragedy. I hope the survivors are ok.

"An NHS doctor sued his employer for racism after he was suspended for being “extraordinarily lazy”, a tribunal heard. Dr Christopher Oyediran was banned by bosses from locum shifts because he would “disappear” every time for up to four hours, an employment tribunal heard. The 36 year-old was reportedly “always late”, which meant that he missed handovers, was “difficult to contact” and had a “verbally aggressive attitude” towards staff." www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2024/10/08/dr-christopher-oyediran-sued-nottingham-university-hospital/
