I'm reading that book 'Life after Us' about what would happen to the planet if humans suddenly disappeared. It's quite interesting but very whiney. As in, wah wah us humans are so howwible. Who will rid Mother Gaia of our tewwible afwiction?

I read something in FHM (I was at the hairdressers for an extended period, it was either that or some woman's mag that appeared to consist mostly of adverts and pictures of shoes) that gave instructions on how to cope after an apocolyptic event. I know how to feed chickens using only a dead dog and a grate.

I suspect I'll need to guard my chickens jealously, less well prepared people will be after my source of protein.

Didn't they do something on the TV on those lines last year? Was it taken from this book? It was an amazing programme to watch, especially on how long it took before all traces of mankind vanished - not very long as it happens.

And the Muslims. In fact, this is a completely unMuzzieable thread, and if only for that reason I think we should keep it alive forever.

I am a happy carnivore, i love eating meat and couldn't imagine being a vegetarian. I respect that some prefer to be vegetarian, we all have a choice after all. I wish us carnivores could be 100% assured that no cruelty is inflicted on the animals we eat. As much as i love eating meat, i can't bear to think the animal was treated inhumanely and killed cruelly. I guess there is no way of knowing for sure. I do try to buy British meat whenever i can, i hope our abbatoir standards are high and the conditions the animals lived in are monitored to be humane.

The Union jack just means it was processed,ie made into bacon, in this country.
The problem is when foreign meat is put on the shelf it is not always obvious to the consumer if it has been imported. If it has been processed or someone has added value to it in the UK they can market it as British."

Get to know your local farmer. Pop around for his eggs, see if he has pigs, if he has, reseve one. Its what I do, I even get to pick my own turkey or goose if I want to.

Yes, Scoob. That's what I do too. It helps that the farmer is a friend and that I know exactly how all the animals are treated. All my eggs, dairy produce, meat, poultry, potatoes and apples and pears come from there. Most of the local community do the same.

I'm a big fan of Hugh Fernley, Its what he does, and its the way to go. Sometimes its more expensive, and I don't care what others think, food fresh from the fam in season is tastier I like to eat "seasonal"

Have any of you ever gone out into the wild (and I mean the real wild) and actually tried to hunt wild pigs? First of all, they are very clean, have a high degree of intelligence, unbelievable sense of smell, acute hearing ability, and blind as a bat. They can run at 35 mph. Pigs should be raised in fields, not in farms and if you ever try hunting one, you will learn patience.

I always buy British with the Union Jack on the packaging, but the trouble is that doesn't guarantee that the animals were treated properly and killed humanely. Not sure there is a way round that problem other than going vegetarian, and i'm afraid i like eating meat too much!

In the wild they are vicious buggers aren't they?
