A leading Irish economist has called on Dublin to threaten withdrawal from the euro unless Europe's big powers do more to rescue Ireland's economy. "It is essential that we go to Europe and say we have a serious problem. We say, either we default or we pull out of Europe," he told RTE radio. "If Ireland continues hurtling down this road, which is close to default, the whole of Europe will be badly affected. The credibility of the euro will be badly affected. Then Spain might default, Italy and Greece," he said. link

Goodness. Does this mean that the EU will have to send troops into Ireland? Will the IRA begin a Xmas bombing campaign in Brussels? Almost ...

So 97% of the Irish people want to stay in the Euro, and there's no alternative.
Hmmm...
I can see the fellows at the European Central Bank moistening their trousers.

Looks like the EU is well and truly fcuked. The strong economies won't take kindly to having to bail out the south and eastern european economies.

I think a lot of this boils down to Ireland having been a 'receiver' from the EU for years, got itself into good condition and is now expected to be a 'giver' - same as us. They don't like it!

Hasn't Ireland done quite nicely thank you out of the EU as it is? The EU dragged Ireland out of the dark ages, well almost, I'd say they were about our Bronze age at the moment

Gypsies are persecuted in the Republic of Ireland (something nobody in the rest of Europe seem too bothered about) which is why there are so many Romany in England.
The Irish lived off the EU and now they're sinking, let them sink.

Sounds like a bit of brown mouthing one former economist, now a journalist, publicised by one of the anti Euro, Tory rags.

But what would you expect from an...ermm 'nationalist' Gypsies are no more persecuted in Ireland than they are in England so your first statement is doubly incorrect.

So the Irish govt offering high interest rates and guaranteeing 100% of bank deposits thereby drawing money in from other economies was desperation? Missed that
