We have neighbours that laid out food bells and drink dishes to attract and feed the black thingyatoos' in our area, they did this thinking they were doing their bit for nature and to have the 'pets' entertain their kids, what they didn't reckon on, was when the thingyatoo's adopted their timber (pinewood) decking (verandah) as building materials for their nests. They began coming in great numbers, sometimes dozens/scores at a time, when the food ran out, they began to eat everything in sight, including the verandah itself. At least $6,000 of repairs were needed with new treated inedible timber.

Heh. There was a piece in the paper here on Monday about a woman who had hung out one of those automatic fatball dispensers. When the bottom fat ball was eaten, the one above dropped automatically down - unfortunately crushing the head of the small bird that had been nibbling at the time. Picture here: www.gp.se/gp/jsp/Crosslink.jsp?d=113&a=470973&ref=puffI found it hilarious, but then I'm twisted.

Tell them they'll never amount to anything and they've wasted their opportunities.

www.smh.com.au/ffximage/2004/10/28/rainbowlorikeet_narrowweb__200x282.jpg'How sweet it is ... a rainbow lorikeet, not yet legless, sups deeply and contentedly at the nectar of the red blossoms on a flowering Schotia brachypetala in Sydney's Royal Botanic Gardens.' Photo: Nick Moir 'Larry Vogelnest, senior veterinarian at Taronga Zoo, said lorikeets in northern Australia were known to become intoxicated on fermenting fruit. "Basically they behave like drunk people, staggering around and unco-ordinated." But Dr Vogelnest said the reported behaviour yesterday of the birds in the gardens made him wonder if there was "something else in the nectar, some chemical agent, rather than ethanol ... that is making them high'

We regularly put food out for the birds. Unfortunately it gets nicked ! He's become a regular visitor to our garden now.
