www.dailymail.co.uk/health/article-1126653/Pregnant-women-paid-100-quit-smoking.htmlPregnant women are to be paid up to £100 by the NHS as an incentive to quit smoking. Expectant mothers will receive £20 for the first week off cigarettes. They will then get another £40 after a month, and £40 more if they manage a full year. The payments will be handed over in the form of vouchers to be used at Co-op stores for any purchases except tobacco and alcohol.

Probably a good thing, I gather it's not very good for foeti if the mother smokes so maybe it saves money in the long run what with not having to put the thing in an incubator when it's born weighing half an ounce.

Another brillinat idea I'm rather puzzled how they're planning to implement this .Do they plan to camp someone at the pregnant womans house to make sure she really doesnt smoke or just take her word for it ?

They do tests n stuff, you breathe into a tube and they can measure the levels of nasties in your blood. If you've been smoking they go up.

Ah <read the article before posting a comment, feral.Tsk >
Midwives and GPs will promote the programme and expectant mothers will be tested using breathalyser-type technology to measure carbon monoxide levels in their bodies during weekly visits to local health clinics.
I can't see that being 100% effective however

Well surely it's better to fork out 100 quid at the start and get a healthy baby than to have to pay thousands when it's born all defective?
I do however think that anyone who can't give up smoking when pregnant should not be pregnant.

Well yes, lets also pay them to send their kids to school, pay them to feed the kids right, pay them to do the job of being a decent parent because without the cash incentive it will be the governments and our fault little Chardonnay and Becks turn out to be uneducated fat blobs that need cash to motivate them into being half decent half arsed citizens.
Nah I'm just not feeling this one is the right way to go.

i think I should apply to the government for some funds to stop me becoming a drain on the NHS, lifetime gym membership, a good holiday a year and a lovely new mountain bike with all the gear should sort it.

..I think perhaps my gynaecologist may have been a smoker himself though mind, lol. He asked me if I smoked or drank alcohol and I thought "ah ohh here we go" and replied that I drank a glass of wine with meals usually and smoked between 10 and 20 a day .He said " okey doke ...dont stop.A glass of wine wont hurt at all and just cut down on the cigarettes as much as possible .Stopping completely will probably cause stress and that is just as bad for your baby as nicotine " I nearly fell off me chair .I have no idea if he was correct but it was convenient to me to take his advice as if he was

Even my mum stopped smoking (cigarettes) when she was stuffed with me and she's the most militant smoker I have ever met.
I dunno, I guess this is one of these things where you either say fine, this kid has crappy parents, well life sucks dunnit or you try to help them get a better start in life despite the crappy parents.

What folly. Can anyone else see the stupidity of this statement?

Co-op store will probably all be shut down in a few months due to recession ? Or the vouchers will be swapped for cash to buy fags n booze anyway.
