I remember being forced to go to see the opera Carmen when i was at school, i think that put me off a bit. I can appreciate that it's brilliant and very clever, but it just doesn't ring my bell i suppose. I am trying to persevere with it! Any recommendations to introduce me to it?!

I sometimes wonder how the language barrier factors into appreciation of Opera by English-speaking audiences. I can understand that you'd be bored very quickly not knowing a word what the performers are singing, because the greatest Operas are written in Italian and German. I don't speak either of these languages either - I just listen to the music and appreciate the voices. :-)
