The job losses will come from the company's Sunderland plant, which employs 4,500 workers. The Sunderland factory is the biggest in the UK and the most productive in Europe. Nissan senior vice-president for manufacturing, Europe, Trevor Mann, said: "Like all manufacturers, Sunderland Plant is currently operating in extraordinary circumstances not of our making. "It is essential we take the right action now to ensure we are in a strong and viable position once business conditions return to normal. "Unavoidably, this means we have had to make some very tough decisions in recent weeks." He added: "The long term future of the plant must remain our over-riding priority." news.sky.com/skynews/Home/Business/Car-Giant-Nissan-Is-To-Axe-1200-jobs/Article/200901215199707?lpos=Business_Carousel_Region_2&lid=ARTICLE_15199707_Car_Giant_Nissan_Is_To_Axe_1%2C200_jobsNeed to work on that^ Bad news for the North East, one of the major employers up there.

We were talking about this at work today. I work for Honda in Swindon. The Japanese companies, Toyota, Nissan and Honda pride themselves on not making people redundant. None of them wanted to be the first to do it. Watch out for Honda and Toyota following suit now the seal has broken. :-(

That's a shame, but I suppose it's inevitable that foreign firms will protect their home workforce first.

My Grandson was due to go there for an apprenticeship, but luckily for him he got a call from another company and they snagged him. Sadly, two of his mates did start with them, and I heard this evening that they expect to be out first.

I just thank God that all my family are still in their jobs at the moment. I don't think any job is particularly safe, every day another big company seems to be on the brink of going into administration. Sign of the times i guess.

Normally, apprentices are the last to be gotten rid of. Fingers crossed those lads will be still there to lock the gates after everyone else has gone.

I hope you're right Muz, they're smashing lads that I love to bits. Frequently come here, kip on the floor, help around the place and just LOVE my cooking!

These things always seem to happen during the Winter too, as if they need harsh weather on top of everything else. Poor devils.
