Why not let her serve the full sentence as a lesson to other ignorant fools? This practice has got to be stamped out. We are powerless to interfere in African villages but civilised countries must be consistent. news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/europe/7848503.stm

These cultural practices continue because of women, pure and simply.
The rantings of the feminist brigade that this is part of male oppression is bunk.
The feminists have failed in this and so many other areas simply because they see men as being responsible for what they percieve as example of oppression. In reality, women oppress themselves and each other.
Sadly, FGM continues simply because very few doctors are prepared to report it.

I see the Danes are considering a ban on ritual circumcision for boys as well.

I agree with jonren - whilst we can't interfere with other customs/beliefs in their native countries, we must ensure the circumcisions of young girls never happens in civilised countries like the UK.

These circumcisions didn't happen in a civilized country like the UK or Denmark. Ritual mutilation of boys does happen in civilized countries like the UK and Denmark. This is the problem.

I presume you are referring to circumcisions for religious reasons and not really rituals aren't you bertrus?!

firstly, the physical manifestations of female and male circumcision are totally different and can't really be compared....
yes, women do it to women and women have to help change it...there have been changes in many societies with symbolic fgm taking place (no actual operation takes place) but a slightly different coming of age ceremony might take place.
germaine greer was in africa many, many moons ago agitating against fgm....apparently talking with a woman elder - who agreed that it was very ingrained in their culture and they were learning to try and modernize their interpretation of their duties and role in society, could not understand why western women chose to go under the knife...............

Is Aldy/Bert claiming that the lead story is a fabrication or that the Times is being dliberately untruthful? www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/uk/health/article609546.ece"HUNDREDS of young girls in Britain are suffering genital mutilation at the hands of women paid to come to Britain by their families. African immigrants are clubbing together to pay for practitioners to fly to Britain and circumcise their daughters in highly secretive rituals. Police believe that the trend has developed among parents who do not have passports or cannot afford to return to their home countries to have their daughters circumcised, a brutal practice that remains commonplace throughout Africa."

As Jonren says, there is no place for barbarous child abuse in a civilized society.
Circumcising cultures may circumcise their males either shortly after birth, during childhood, or around puberty as part of a rite of passage. Circumcision is commonly practised in the Jewish and Islamic faiths. ...
Jewish law states that circumcision is a 'mitzva aseh ("positive commandment" to perform an act) and is obligatory for Jewish-born males and some Jewish male converts. ... It is usually performed by a mohel on the eighth day after birth in a ceremony called a Brit milah (or Bris milah, colloquially simply bris), which means "Covenant of circumcision" in Hebrew. It is considered of such religious importance that the body of an uncircumcised Jewish male will sometimes be circumcised before burial.[31] Wikipedia

Only the women organise it, only women pay for it, its all the fault of women, just ask Tarrant If you understood anything about these cultures you would realise that the image of firghtened, insecure, downtrodden women under the dominating influence of men is an utter nonsense. The presumption by feminists that only they are in any way liberated is arrogance. In African society, the principals of the male - female interaction are very different from Europe. Our concept of shame in relation to sex is entirely alien to these cultures. Women are dominant by proxy. Men are a reflection of the way their wives treat them. The greatest fear most women in African countries have is that another woman will 'steal their man'. This has resulted in a whole body of precepts encouraging arranged marriages, often at a very young age to FGM. All designed to reduce the incentive of women to look at other women's men. In cultures where men have several wives, for example, each wife has her place on a strict hierarchy. Our problem here in Europe is and always has been that we look at other societies with our own values.

If the women are subjugated by the men, then the men are to be held responsible.
