With grateful thanks to Yord. This has come up on a thread in the MSN News, and is food for thought for everyone! uk.msnusers.com/News/general.msnw?action=get_message&mview=0&ID_Message=2540879&all_topics=0If you have DD's with companies for anything, think about how much you would be willing to lose. If nothing, then stop them, now. Most can remove any amount from your account and then go bust, in which case you will lose the lot, even if they have overcharged you.

gosh! Thank got me checking. Wasn't even sure what I do pay by DD
I think it's the power, council tax, BBC licence, the water rates and the RAC.
At least it's easy to check online nowadays

Blimey! We pay all the utilities and the mortgage by direct debit! I don't trust banks at all these days! It's the charges that worry me too!

Ha! I was paying my gas bill by DD and never bothered checking. The time that I did check I discovered that I was nearly a grand in credit because they'd raised my payment to something over a hundred a month. Naturally I cancelled the DD and expected to hear nothiing for at least a year. They must have whipped the postman to get a letter to me so fast demanding to know why I'd cancelled.

We had similar with our electric a couple of years ago. We were about £160 in credit and as things were a bit tight, we asked for a refund of our credit balance. No luck! We were told that the credit balance would be used towards our Winter usage. In the end we changed suppliers.

I thought the banks g'tee scheme ensured you were refunded if an unauthorised amount was taken by DD.

The trouble is with some direct debit authorities they don't specify exactly what amount these companies can take, many just say unspecified amounts. That's when the problems start because they can literally take anything. Also many direct debit authorities state in small print that the company can at any time alter the amount claimed. I guess it's best to check all our direct debit authorities with our banks.
