Public holiday today Happy Australia Day to Aussie's far & wide we'll be celebrating later today at friends BBQ and will be sure to have a glass of Australian lemonade or two.. www.australiaday.com.auPerth Skyworks Perth hosts the biggest Australia Day celebration in the country, with between 300,000 and 400,000 people flocking to the city river foreshores and vantage points to enjoy the stunning views of the Skyshow. The fireworks are synchronised to a sensational soundtrack celebrating pride in our country. Events include an air and water show featuring a variety of aircrafts and spectacular aquatic activities on the Swan River. The Survival Concert in the Supreme Court Gardens is a national celebration of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander music, performance, visual art and culture and is free to attend.

And thankfully Helena Dokic won her match and has made it to the quarter finals at the Australian Open.
After last years sporting disasters here's hoping for a better year in 2009.

I have spent a few Australia Days with natives from that land, but not in Australia. Included in the day was yomping through mangrove swamps followed by seeing how long you could sit on a huge block of ice - of course, you were totally off your head before doing any of this! They sure know how to have fun - bless 'em!!

This thread should be in chat chat as there is nothing news about Australia Day ................ that said we'll be celebrating in our house as usual - as except for the youngest we are all citizens of that lucky country, in fact we have 2 Aussie born dirty diggers - and they want the day off school - aye right! What I'd give for a Tooheys the noo.

quote : Samuel Johnson "Patriotism is the last refuge of scoundrels" How many of these Patriots would put aside their parties and opt for an enlistment to Afghanistan ?

oh and btw I am sure a couple of million dollars could have been better spent by the lotteries commision under the present circumstances rather than make young Aussies feel warm and fluffy .

TMBTL you are out of your comfort zone of Nomads I see Australia day is a public holiday to us , a day off work .............We enjoy having it off, just as we have a day off for Queen Liz's birthday , I don't know anyone who celebrates it as such other than going to watch a free show of fireworks ..We are certainly not anal about it like Americans when they celebrate Thanksgiving or Independence day

warofwords Out of my comfort zone I am not . Perhaps I should refer you to the four page item in Saturdays SMH where they are preporting and discussing the use of the Australian flag . Absolutely nothing wrong with a day off but there is a problem when it is used as a patriotic call to racism stoked by alchahol. The real problem here is that it enhances their fundamental thoughts on the subject of immigrants and foreign workers . This in turn has been fermented by the media when it comes to countries that are continually being accused of rogue nation status . It doesnt occur to these young boneheads that the life blood of Australia is dependent on foreign investment .Always has and always will be despite its abundant resources .

Good point TMBTL , keep reminding your fellows that they are fools to have patriotic thoughts and must get on their knees and kiss foreign ass regularly to keep them happy and investing in Australia. Vomit.
