I like it New Yorker. Wouldn't that be a bit like communism though? My point is though that elderly people often have the money to pay for things[some of them stash it under the bed]. They just get confused at some point. Heck so do I

Brilliant NY! Completely agree with you! In theory that's a great idea, but would be hard to put into practice. For example in the UK, how would the gas and electric suppliers differentiate between the genuine needy and society's scroungers. By that i mean Benefit Scroungers, they can have their heating cut off! Why the heck should the British taxpayer keep them warm . . . . no way!
For the genuinely needy, whether old or young, keep their heating at all times! Absolutely!

Aye. The enforcement of debt can always wait a little while, and when it is done it shouldn't happen without good notice and careful checks.

Where i work in a large nursing home with the elderly, we had one old lady admitted and she came in clutching a large tin. We thought she had some special biscuits in there that she wanted to keep safe. She kept hold of this tin all day until bed time. As she suffered from dementia she needed help with getting to bed and with her medication, so another nurse asked her if she could put the "biscuit" tin down for a moment. The sweet old lady carefully put the tin down on a chair but didn't balance it correctly. It toppled onto the floor, the lid flew off and out fell dozens and dozens of £20 notes! We later found out that there was almost £9500 cash in the tin that she had been collecting as she didn't trust banks. Bless her! ;D

I was watycing telly last night and this thing came on about how US hospitals routinely dump elderly patients who cant pay their medical bills at homeless shelters, it showed camera footage of confused pentioners in hospital gowns beeing dumped out of taxis and left to wonder till someone from the shelter noticed them. They intervied the shelter staff who said it happened on a regular basis and in all weathers
This is beyond shocking who the elderly are treated in the US

The ironic thing is NY that the old lady's daughter put the money from the biscuit tin straight into a bank account!

All they are wearing are hospital gowns in total confusion, it's appalling! Makes me sick!

When I was a DN in the UK Libby I was driving past the local hospital where an old lady ws been sheperded back to the hospital by staff who were unable to physically take her back cos it would have been asault, I stopped to help, but was told we could not lay a hand on her, and had to wait til the police came to take her back to the ward. One on the nurse (I trained with her its why I stopped) said they were no longer allowed to physically stop a patient from leaving untill a psychiatrist had assessed their mental state and of cause there was never enough psychiatrists available to do the assesments so they had patients they knew were mentally incompitent wandering off the ward, but were not allowed to stop em. Poor man. The pensions are so low while the essentials bills get higher and higher. Electricity, water, gas, poll tax, tv licence, rent or mortgage.
How on earth are pensioners supposed to keep warm? It is hard enough to feed themselves. Social Services seem to dodge responsibility wherever possible. The elderly don't appear to be a priority.
Many lost their private pensions due to mismanagement of their pension fund. Robert Maxwell deprived a great many people of the pensions they had worked hard to pay for. The pensions in the UK are paltry and completely inadequate.
I have heard of people dumping their elderly relatives in airports in America. don't know if it is true or not

Somehow I'm sure Americans love their parents as much as you folks do yours.

There's absolutely nothing to suggest they don't. I think that the problems may arise when there is no family to fall back on. That's one time when a 'nanny state' really comes to the fore.

"The blame will just be juggled around until it falls from public interest."
Yup. The power company has already essentially blamed the mans neighbors for it.
"Don't get old"
My father started telling me that when he was 60.

Dumping our elderly in airports ? Are you retarded ? I have read about such a thing happening but it is more usual for the elderly to be dumped at ER departments. No, Lawrence, I am neither retarded or rude like you.
