It's the impersonal, computerised age of 'who gives a dam'.
I always said I would only get old if I was lucky, sometimes I feel the opposite to be true when reading such stories.
So sad.

I'm too late to not grow old. I keep the house warm with my gas at £113 per month and electricity £50. I remember when North Sea gas was first discovered, we were told that it was so plentiful we could almost have it for nothing. Some hope!

"On Jan. 13, a worker with the city-owned utility installed a "limiter" on Schur's electric meter after four months of unpaid bills. The device restricts power and blows like a fuse if usage rises past a set level. Electricity is not restored until the device is flipped back on by the homeowner, who must walk outside to the meter."
I hope the worker who installed the limiter has a guilty conscience for not reporting about the old boy's age and situation, living alone, risk of cold, vulnerability etc! Unforgivable! Makes my blood boil, so very sad!

Yes, I agree with that sentiment, NY, but I seriously wonder what the neighbours were doing. Icicles and frosted windows? Didn't they notice?

Pensioners should have free electricity and gas, I would even pay more tax for this to happen.

I like people of his generation far more than the near worthless bastards we've got now.

I agree with you too NY! His generation knew respect and hard work, both things sadly lacking today! To think he was a World War II veteran, and was left to freeze to death beggars belief! This could have happened in any society, ours in the UK is no better, i am ashamed to say. Many old folk are cold, unfed and neglected. It seems they are the forgotten souls, and this should not be permitted to happen.

This society we have created is face-less sometimes and that is its downfall. Elderly people such as this man have the intention of paying their bills for the most part, but become confused and forgetful. It's usually the grown up children who deal with such things when it becomes apparent that their parents can't handle the bills any longer. There should be a databse for such people who are considered at risk so that allowances can be made or the payment for bills can be arranged on a personal basis

I agree icas, that's a good idea for the database etc. Trouble is then the do-gooders in today's society would say that being on a database breaches the old peoples' Human Rights and it's not politically correct to have all their information readily available and monitored and it breaks confidentiality and is against the Date Protection Act and other mumbo jumbo! The system has made everything so complex because of all this ludicrous legislation.

Don't you think that we are all on data bases anyway though?

Just pisses me completely off. It goes beyond disgusting. The final salt on the wound is that no one is responsible. The blame will just be juggled around until it falls from public interest.

It woudn't surprise me icas! After all do you remember all those confidential disks disappeared in the post with thousands of peoples' personal info on. I think it was the Inland Revenue, and more recently hospital disks have "gone missing" with personal info on!
It's usually a social services error with anything that happens like this in the UK grizzley. It seems day in and day out that there is another case, whether it be an old person or a child suffering from neglect.

Y'know what? When the weather is extreme, extreme cold or extreme hot, you don't cut the power to ANYBODY!
How's that for a rule!?
