Good idea. The government has outlined plans to boost the digital and communications industries, which contribute more than £50bn a year to the UK economy. In a statement to Parliament, the Culture Secretary Andy Burnham said Britain "led the world in content creation". news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/7858498.stm

I'm sorry, I tried to read it but my eyes glazed over, can you explain in simple terms what they plan to do and why letting people download their porn quicker is so important?

Erm. They want broadband to be like phone lines, where companies have an obligation to provide it. They want to get rid of analoge radio and stuff and have digital. And loads of other stuff like that.
Plus, more importantly, the bloke in charge is the Nation's Greatest Politician.

Well obviously Joyce. It's good for the economy too.

How does letting me download an episode of Californication in ten minutes instead of half an hour bring in money to the economy? I feel I'm missing a point here.

The internet makes stuff easier, VHW. Education, finding jobs, applying for loans with Ocean Finance etc etc. Oils the cogs of the economy, dunnit.

Yeah but you can do all that with less than 2MB broadband or whatever it is they're after. I am wondering why someone filling in a job application in fractionally less time is important, to the rest of us anyway.

What are they actually proposing - do taxpayers have to pay to buy computers and broadband for the people who haven't got it?

Giving access to all in Britain would only slow things down anyway.

No. Legislation, regulation, and subsidy.

Subsidy means "taxpayer pays," what are they proposing subsidies of?

Sounds alright in practice. Labour will just balls it up. Best leave it till 2010 when a proper government will take it over.

And, of course, the millions of people without computers - the poor and old of this country, mainly - really couldn't give a toss if they had 28kbps or 2mbps lines (2 megabit is still horribly slow, btw). This is just another government slush-fund for the educated chattering middle classes, same as tax breaks for private schools.
