I'd actually like to find out what the rules are for American football so I can actually attempt to watch it one day
that might be difficult cos I said earlier V no one has ever managed to stay awake long enough to find out, and the scantely clad ladies they emply to keep the spectaors from slipping into comas distract from ever having to learn why a game of 80 mins lasts several days

The rules are actually pretty basic. Move the ball to the other end of the field. You do this in series of "downs", the offense gets 4 downs to get 10 yards. If they get 10 yards it's back to 1st down and you have a new series of downs to start with. If you gain 4 yards on 1st down, it then becomes 2nd down and 6 (yards to go for a 1st down). Usually teams will punt the ball to the other team on 4th down, unless they think thay can get to a first down. If they don't get a first down when trying on 4th down, the other team takes over the ball at that spot.

Wouldn't it just be easier to head for the line at the other end of the field and the opposition try and stop them getting there?

Wouldn't it just be easier to head for the line at the other end of the field and the opposition try and stop them getting there? That is what they do. The difference from footie and rugby is that play stops when the ball carrier is tackled and it goes to the next down. I think the stoppage of play is what a lot of people don't like about the game.

When I opened this reply box I had a witty and incisive reply ready !
I've forgotten it ..... It's late at night (almost 01:00am) and I'm as tired as a nute ( I blame the wine) - G'Night ..........
