"Parents, business leaders and education campaigners last night condemned the decision to close 8,000 schools across the UK yesterday even though the snowy conditions gripping the country eased in some areas" www.guardian.co.ukParents angry at having to arrange childcare that they thought should not have been necessary.

Sounds like they were all to eager to shut schools. I blame idiot health and safety rules.

They never shut down when I was a kid, you got there, and so did everyone else. Mostly it's the teachers not turning up that makes the problems - bunch of wusses. I do get angry when teachers have been spotted out shopping, but can't get to school!

The only times I can remember my school shutting in the winter is when the boiler broke down.

Typical of teachers, any excuse for a day away from the children. Tag on the weeks of sick leave. Training days and their overlong holiday entitlement and there you have it.

My son's school was open on Monday, the worst day for the conditions around here.
Two pupils were ferried by ambulance to Ipswich General Hospital after falling over on ice whlst walking to school. One suffered a broken wrist as she tried to break her fall, the other, a boy, suffered a broken arm. Oh well, just two casualties out of a school roll of around 200 isn't bad I suppose.
The Headteacher and Governors are now being asked why the school was opened, and how they didn't foresee accidents like this when making their decision. I'm sure I've heard it said before that you just can't please all of the people all of the time.

I wonder how many kids got injured because they didn't go to school? In sledging or skiing etc.
There was that 16 year old in Rotherham that died sledging, and others hurt. She'd have been alive if she had gone to college/school.

Fury over school closures
I'm fairly certain there wasn't any 'FURY'......Exasperation maybe - but not fury.
Why do headline writers have to overstate everything ?

Parents were quite angry where i live. We hardly had any snow and yet on Tuesday i received a text from the school (bearing in mind it's only round the corner from where we live!) saying they only had "skeleton staff", so the children (aged between 11-16) were not permitted in school that day! Any children turning up at school would be sent home! Needless to say, no children went. They all congregated down at the local pond throwing snowballs!

Exactly Libby ...... if it's safe to go out climbing hills and sledging, building snow men and having snowball fights - Then you should be in school !
(The bloody teachers should just make an effort) !

One of our local primaries closed for a day before Christmas because of 'Threat of Snow' ......... No Snow appeared - but they stayed closed anyway.
