My point Vania is that words do change and take on different connotations. Words used in the 1950's are completely unacceptable now. I'm am not particularly PC but I would never call my black friends Gollywogs or N*****. And Yes it is perfectly ok for them to call themselves that.

So are we now stuck in a world where language never changes? So Paki is ok because it was just short for 'Pakistan' irrespective of the usage it now adopts? Spot on Vania. Golliwog was last used as a racial insult in about 1971. I think we've moved on since then.

The effect of the long list of advantages being given to some groups is to cause resentment among others. British people are not racist. There is no racism in British culture. The opposite. Point 1 is bizarre non-sequitor. Point 2 is just wrong. Point1 Many British people are getting throughly fed up with being continually accused of racism for almost any infraction of rules laid down by those that benefit from them. Blackboards must be chalk boards for example. When words are used with the intention of offending then they are offensive. But when they are used in other ways, not. It is offensive that the daily lives of people in this country are disrupted by those that come here with a chip on their shoulders. Nothing non-sequitur about it at all. Point 2. British people are not racist. they are insular.

Oh, I don't know if the reports are true but if the person who it is alleged Carol said looks like a golliwog is really the tennis player they are referring to (the French one), then I am at a loss as to how her description was remotely accurate? Exactly Vania, an awful lot of alleging going on here, and none but those in that room know the truth of it. What exactly was said, and how. I agree. Which is why I don't understand why people are lamblasting the BBC for their decision. Surely everybody (those applauding and those attacking) aren't really fit to comment either way?

WKC is spot on, on this thread.
As for the BBC, I don't really understand why everyone has to know about it. There was no reason at all to publicise this except for the sake of their corporate-munchausens.

I would never call a blackman a golliwog either. But i would call a golliwog a golliwog. Just as i would call a gonk a gonj and a teddy a teddy.

Oh, and Tarrant, I've never known anyone offended by blackboard, and usually they are called chalkboards as a generic term to cover the green ones, too. Although, I would agree, even that is a bit silly and everyone knows what a blackboard is.

Is it any coincidence that the BNP sell these "harmless toys" like hot cakes at their events etc?

It moved on from the image of a cute cuddly little doll about 50 years ago.

The blackboard thing has feck all to do with PC I reckon. It's more the evolution of management wankspeak that has introduced the term "chalkboard".
Lots of straw-manness surrounding the whole "PC" thing. All you have to do is deploy the "PC Gone Mad!" card and you can justify all kinds of fcukwitted, racist, and offensive behaviour.

Tarrant do you mean British society has no siginificant problems with racism ( which I wholeheartedly agree with) or that there are no racist people in Britain (which is a nonsense)?

How many people here have been told to refer to blackboards as 'chalkboards' being honest?
I have never, ever, ever heard the term used in real life. Ever, ever, ever. Ever. And I've worked at social services...

The BNP thing is why I fcuking hate the self-styled anti-PC warriors on the Right of politics.
They've bleated so long and whinged so loudly about PC gone maaad that we've now arrived at a point where even the likes of the BNP can turn round and say "we're not racist. We're just anti-PC". Very dangerous.

Lots of things are banned from sale. Why do you suppose the BNP chose golliwogs in particular to make this brave point about censorship?

And I've worked at social services... Yes, I have, I worked in an Independant school up to 2 years ago, and we had to refer to them as chalkboards, or boards. We also had Whiteboards, and that was fine - oddly enough!
