The ocean is terrifying. I don’t understand why anyone goes in it.

Safer than driving a car.

Driving a car in the ocean is deadly.

Unless you are driving a car-go ship

Or an es-car-go ship if you drive really slowly.

A woman has been killed by a great white in the first fatal shark attack on record in the US state of Maine. The woman was swimming near Bailey Island - close to the city of Portland - on Monday when she was attacked. www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-53572785Its that time again.

How come it's mostly white people that get eaten by sharks? Oceanic racism?

Or they might be avoiding black people. The sharks that is. The "great" whites.

Isn't it because black people can't swim, so there are fewer of them in ocean that's deep enough for sharks? All the black people in the ocean have drowned within about 10 feet of the shoreline.

Lower body fat, smaller lungs. Open goal here for anyone who has a weird obsession with certain former Labour front benchers...

White sharks do sometimes attack whales.

"It is only the second shark attack ever recorded in Maine. The species is less common in the region because of its cooler waters."
Not sure that bears scrutiny.

Lower body fat, smaller lungs. Is that right? I thought it was about bone density but I am prepared to defer to your knowledge

Funny, that clip's been reported elsewhere but not as drowning. The f**k*r's clearly trying to immobilise the whale by hamstringing to poor sod. I guess that could be an instinctive tactic. It's a obvious vulnerability I suppose, a sort of Achilles' fluke.

"It is only the second shark attack ever recorded in Maine. The species is less common in the region because of its cooler waters." Not sure that bears scrutiny. Yeah. Given that there are loads of great whites currently hanging about off Cape Cod, 70 miles from Maine, I'm not convinced. It might be the second shark attack in Maine because of Maine's colder waters - but because there are fewer humans in Maine's waters, not fewer sharks.

True dat. Also SoCal is notoriously chilly in the briney. Cold, oxygen-rich upwelling.
