Hull pupils bottom of GCSE league Secondary school pupils in Hull are at the bottom of the national GCSE league tables once more, with just 29.6% achieving five or more A* to C grades. The councillor responsible for education in the city has said that parents and pupils must shoulder some of the responsibility for the failings. Councillor Mike Ross said that education "needed to be valued by young people and their parents". The England average for pupils reaching the benchmark pass rate is 47.6%. news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/england/humber/7831226.stm

my mum used to teach in one of the bottom schools in hull, just down the road from john prescots house. I worked in the library there for a bit.
I say she taught, it was mainly child minding, with a bit of riot control thrown in.

I say she taught, it was mainly child minding, with a bit of riot control thrown in. Teachers are on a hiding to nothing. The results are very misleading as anyone who has any connection with education will verify. In an attempt to produce results, children are screened before they take any exams. Due to the cost of entering the exam, unless they stand a chance of getting a decent grade, they don'e even get entered. Government figures do not show the real picture.

this has long been the case, loads of kids in my school back in the early 80's didnt even sit exams cos it was considered a waste of time, or the best they had was the old CSE, wich was next to meaningless

Scoob is right.
You can make the figures say what you like and the test results don't show the actual figures of those who do manage to get passes. Someone with 4As and a D would show up on those figures as a failed pupil where , in fact, for that pupil, they may have worked very hard to the max of their ability to get those passes.

True Puffin, If you can get a child to fulfill his or her potential, then you had succeded.
Sadly, government do not allow for this. Having said that, no mention is made of the tremendous cost of "Sucess Centres" a real 1984 phrase, since they are filled with, sorry to say for the most part, "no Hopers"
The brighter kids are penalised by this system. Suggest streaming to get the best and most acedemic kids to achieve their potential and you get the bleatings of "Elitist" and Labour, in spite of their bull sh*t hate it.

The whole educational system is ridiculous these days - predicted target grades don't help! A boy at my son's school had a predicted grade E for maths. In his mock exam he managed a grade E and the teacher was thrilled! She couldn't understand why the parents were so disappointed because the lad had achieved what they reckoned he would! The school then put the boy in the red achieving colour zone, as opposed to the yellow under achievers and the green inbetweeners! No wonder GCSE's are such a mess!

Chis Rea wrote a song about this. It went "Is this a Technological break down? oh no it is the Road to Hull".
Libby; The good thing about walking a mile in someones shoes is that, if they get angry, you're a mile away and they're barefoot.

Hull is a nu labour triumph.
We used to go clubbing there. Anybody been to The Tower? Everybody walked like they were on the moon because their feet were sticking to the carpet. The police women on duty around town used to pull up a motorist around closing time so they could claim that they were busy when the fighting started outside The Tower. The Eclipse used to do a brilliant heavy rock night and play YMCA at the end to encourage everyone to leave. And Gino's used to do the best kebabs in the world.

To be fair, hull was a shithole well before NuLab appeared. Although it's probably sunk a bit deeper.

I've never been to Hull. Is it worth a visit ? Art galleries ? Museums ? Historic Landmarks ? Quaint Customs ?

The councillor responsible for education in the city has said that parents and pupils must shoulder some of the responsibility for the failings. What?! Suggesting that the people who aren't doing any fcuking homework or putting in any effort and the ones who are meant to be responsible for them have any input into their own lives and achievements? Throw him to the lions quick before this dangerous sedition spreads. Hull is just there for a source of amusement to the rest of England. Like Birmingham.
