Why have the media suddenly decided that a £100m transfer and £500k a week wages for Kaka are obscene, the death of football etc etc? Wasn't Man Utd paying £30m for Wayne Rooney "obscene"? Isn't John Terry or Stephen Gerrard earning upwards of £100k a week "obscene"? And they are going on about Man City "distorting the market" by outbidding everyone else, as if Man U, Chelsea and Liverpool haven't been doing that for years. Football "died" a long time ago, but it seems to me that it only registers with the media now that the monopoly of their beloved "Big 4" is threatened. Football has been dead in the Premiership for the last 10-15 years at least.

Hi WKC.
I'm a new member here. Bit of info about me: lifelong Conservative voter, now decided that under Cameron they are such useless Rightwing throwbacks to the 80s that I will vote Labour at the next election.
You're right about cricket though. Anyone managed to get tickets for the Ashes?

As a Leyton Orient supporter, I believe that football actually died in 1982.
There has been the odd nervous twitch of life now and again, but decomposition is well and truly under way now.

Like Sir Anthony Wedgwood-Benn I too surrendered my Peerage to join Comrade Brown on his quest for the perfect Socialist State.
I am, however, a Member of the MCC.

hopefully the Premier League will follow the investment banking world down at the shitterr at a rapid rate of knots. 100k+ a week for kicking a ball is just wrong.

...and gone to a Young Conservative's dance.

Wonder if the recession is having any effect on Sky subscriptions?
If so, any contract for Premier League broadcast rights is likely to be significantly less come renewal time

Football died in 1987 when Oxford got relegated from the top flight.
It got exhumed, chopped into pieces, and reburied when Oxford got relegated to the third tier.
It got exhumed again, eaten by mangy feral rats, and excreted back into its grave, when Oxford got relegated to the bottom division.
It got dug up, buggered by a necrophiliac George W Bush, defiled by Dick Cheney crapping on it, and buried again, when Oxford were relegated out of the league altogether.
But, really, getting 5 points docked for fielding a player who'd been our player for the last 2 years and is on a 3 year contract, really is the point where I think "FARK ME!", this game is a bit silly, really.

Minge - apparently TV subscriptions do well during a recession.
Also apparently, the beancounters aren't too arsed about domestic TV any more - "emerging markets" is where the money is.

It's astonishing how many Manchester United and Liverpool and Chelsea shirts you see on black and Indian kids here in Jo'burg.
