Officials in Maryland and Washington DC are suing Donald Trump for accepting payments from foreign governments via his business empire.
The lawsuit cites the US constitution's emoluments clause, which says no federal official should receive a gift or a fee from a foreign government.
The suit claims Mr Trump is "flagrantly violating the constitution", Washington DC's attorney general said.
It is the first such lawsuit filed by government entities.
"Never in the history of this country have we had a president with these kinds of extensive business entanglements or a president who refused to adequately distance himself from their holdings," Karl Racine, the District of Columbia attorney general said while announcing the lawsuit alongside Brian Frosh, Maryland's attorney general, on Monday.
A non-governmental organisation, Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington, lodged a similar legal action in January.

U.S. President Donald Trump is being investigated by special counsel Robert Mueller for possible obstruction of justice, the Washington Post reported on Wednesday, citing unidentified officials.

The special counsel examining Russia’s meddling in the 2016 election has requested interviews with three high-ranking current or former intelligence officials in the latest indication that he will investigate whether President Trump obstructed justice, a person briefed on the investigation said on Wednesday.

The special counsel, Robert S. Mueller III, wants to question Dan Coats, the director of national intelligence; Adm. Michael S. Rogers, the head of the National Security Agency; and Richard Ledgett, the former N.S.A. deputy director.

None of the men were involved with Mr. Trump’s campaign. But recent news media reports have raised questions about whether Mr. Trump requested their help in trying to get James B. Comey, then the F.B.I. director, to end an investigation into Mr. Trump’s former national security adviser. Last week, Mr. Coats and Admiral Rogers declined to answer questions before Congress about the matter.

Mr. Mueller’s office has also asked the N.S.A. for any documents or notes related to the agency’s interactions with the White House as part of the Russia investigation, according to an intelligence official.

Well now, the last couple of days is a bit more than just the usual Trump-failure stuff. His team are now much closer to getting prosecuted.

His moronic son - somehow even thicker than dad - set up a meeting between himself, Kushner (the supposed brains of the family) and a Russian who was offering dirt on Clinton. Which is illegal, as you're not allowed to solicit foreign aid in an election. And Don Jr has even released the email chain which makes all of this absolutely explicit.

It doesn't explicitly quite yet get back to Don Sr, but there's now a smoking gun connecting the Trump campaign to the Russian government and its attempts to swing the election. And there's all kinds of other peripheral stuff: Manafort; Flynn; Russian hackers getting at Clinton's emails; Republican policy on Ukraine changing just as this stuff was coming out.... and so on and so forth. There may sometimes be smoke without fire, but this is a sh*t-load of smoke (yeah, I know I'm mixing my smoke metaphors).

Which sucks for McCain, but which makes for some fascinating senate maths, given that he either stands down to create a special election (presumably in 2018), which creates a third possible target for Democrats, or he soldiers on and misses a ton of votes - leaving an odd number of votes in most cases, and therefore needing only 2 Republicans to defect (and Pence's deciding vote becomes redundant) to defeat any legislation.
