20 years ago there were twice as many bankruptcies from medical costs. 20 years ago almost everyone was indentured to their employers and there was a far less flexible employment market because people could not quit their jobs and start small businesses because they couldn't risk losing their health insurance and having to buy on the individual market. 20 years ago there were tens of millions more people than now without health insurance. 20 years ago people without health insurance used the Emergency Room for personal health care and those who didn't have the assets to pay were covered by the government for far more expensive treatment. 20 years ago people were scared to get diagnosed with anything, because then they'd have a pre-existing condition. The idea that it worked better 20 years ago is nonsense. It's the view of someone who was permanently employed and insulated from the perils of not having cover from a large business's plan 20 years ago my health insurance cost less then half of what it does today, even without being carried as a secondary on my wife's ins the deductible was about a fourth, I had access to any hospital in the country, and with wife's ins help I didn't pay any deductible, though we no longer carry each other on ins, Thanks Obama Do you think it's possible that your personal experience is different t many other people's?

This doesn't make any sense. The disabled are still on Medicare. As an aside, one of the ironies - at least among people I know - is that the people most vocally opposed to both the ACA and to government healthcare already have government healthcare. They're either elderly and on Medicaid, or they're ex-military and get their healthcare that way. But both are on government run healthcare schemes. It doesn't make sense for the elderly to be opposed, unless they are very wealthy, because my understanding is that the bill gives insurers a lot more leeway to charge higher premiums to old people. So it's conceivable that the elderly would see their premiums rise by thousands of dollars and some could see their premiums double. And, even then, they wouldn’t necessarily be getting the same level of coverage that they currently receive. Ah! You're making the crazy assumption that people make sense. Mind you, the actual elderly, over-65s, won't see much change from this in the short term. It's 55-64 year olds who'll be paying more But the properly elderly, of course, are on a simple, single-payer, government run, perfectly effective health program. But, for reasons that remain opaque, many of them seem to think that this isn't the same as the "socialised medicine" that they go on tirades against. Basically, the people who're in favour of this sh*t either have tens of millions in assets or don't understand it.

"The parallels with Brexit are simply breathtaking." Indeed....all good news stories must be "despite" Trump and all bad stories must be tagged "because" of the Donald.....! Please carry on posting to your self serving echo chamber.....enjoy. Out of interest, what particular feats of brilliance is Trump not being given credit for?

That article looks about right. If Trump can maintain the same level of job growth over 6 months that Obama managed over 70, then that's progress. But right now employment is a lagging indicator and this is still the Obama economy. There isn't a single change that Trump has yet brought in the impacts businesses or hiring.
If the Labour Market Participation rate increases, that would be better yet, but there's no sign of anything better than Obama achieved yet.
If Wage growth for people outside the top 5% increases, that would be best yet, because that's the one indicator that never saw much growth above inflation during the Obama years. It should have grown as the available labour pool shrank an unemployment fell, but for some reason market tightening didn't help wage inflation. In theory just a few more months of Obama-level job growth should trigger it organically, but Trump would probably get credit for it.

The Kushner family was in Beijing hawking visas for big bucks to a group of investors. They even had Trump's picture in the presentation slides.
The Repugnicants in congress today "investigating" Flynn and the Russian influence used their time to grill Sally Yates on why she didn't implement Trump's travel ban.
Learned that Trump was warned twice about Flynn, by Obama and by Yates. He promotes him to Nat'l Security Advisor anyway, then when the Russian story breaks he blames Obama and smears Yates. That's his basic MO, folks.
More head-shaking shite every day. Whaddya say, jimbo? Proud of your great leader?

You understand that just because the March report was "the first to measure employment gains that occurred entirely under Trump’s presidency" does not mean that the growth was the result of Trump's policies. What policies did this Tian of Decision put in place that lead to that growth? Surely you can point to actual concrete STUFF that he did to boost the economy? Some executive orders that made it happen?

Don t worry I am sure that Trump will start bombing the ME very soon if only to spread the chaos and destruction that Prez Obama presided over.

I think I'm pretty typical on this, it's kinda funny, on the hour this bill made it through the house the Dems announced that the Republicans NOW own health care, even though this thing has not even been looked at by the Senate, Obama care is so great that the Dems can't wait to get away from it, Obama Care is still the law of the land, and will likely be so for for months to come, maybe years

And of course that still doesn't mean everybody has the same experience? If everybody was happy with their healthcare why is it such a talking point?

you would have to ask the democrats that, I don't have a clue,, There were a few people who fell through the cracks, unstead of helping them the democrats chose to screw everyone, there are still people without health care

Obama care is totally junk, thanks to Obama the USA now has the worst health care system in the world, IF you were uninsured, and have a major covered illness you might be better off with it, all the rest of America is screwed, if you remember even Hillary claimed it needed fixing

Americans are still struggling with their health, and rank last against citizens of 10 other wealthy countries when it comes to emotional distress, struggling to pay for care and skipping doctor visits, a new report finds. The latest report from the Commonwealth Fund, which routinely points to the shortcomings of the U.S. healthcare system, shows not much has changed in 15 years or longer. Americans still pay far more for medical care than people in other rich Western nations but have little to show for all that spending. The group surveyed 26,863 adults from Australia, Britain, Canada, France, Germany, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, and the United States. It found 43 percent of low-income Americans went without medical care because of costs. In the other countries, these rates ranged from 8 percent in Britain to 31 percent in Switzerland. "In comparison to adults in the other 10 countries, adults in the United States are sicker and more economically disadvantaged" the report reads.LINK

If you then pass legislation attempted to completely ruin the insurance market further - removing the individual mandate, for example; and pass legislation to take $800bn out of healthcare and move it to tax cuts for billionaires; you'd think the insurance companies might start getting cold feet about being in the market at all. Basically, by passing legislation the Republican Party is now responsible for any f**k ups that happen in the insurance market. (This isn't necessarily true, but it would be a very easy case to argue for Democrats). - Also - the fact that you're "typical" isn't all that helpful. The median person in the US always had OK healthcare, because the median person is indentured to their employer and has healthcare as a result of never being an entrepreneur and never having to leave work. The problem wasn't - generally - the median person, who were part of the 60-80% who got treated for health troubles The problem was the other 20-40% who were not covered, or who got sick and could never move jobs again, or who had lifetime caps on their coverage and couldn't get treated for long term conditions...

Is it by making sure that every policy has to cover basic health conditions? Is it by making sure that no policies can cap out the amount spent on an individual who's sick? Is it by making sure that no policies anywhere can discriminate against people who have pre-existing conditions? Which of these protections do you think it would be good to remove?
