“Amy Manuel, whose twin sons are in the eighth-grade reading class in Texas, told KFDM-6 she objected to the book's content regarding Anne's attraction toward another girl, saying of the passage in which Anne writes about her fantasies, "that's not okay." Something tells me Amy Manuel is a bit of a homophobe.

I wonder how is matters that she was reading from the illustrated version. Even had the illustrations been XXX, she would still have been reading from it.
On a serious note, America is awful, but could it really be the case that teachers can only read to students from a selection of approved books? I doubt that's the case. I certainly hope not.

I've only just remembered/re-noticed that there a load of other boards (sub-boards?) on here. How queer.

On a side note, I've learned recently that reading in English schools is also reactionary nonsense in a lot of places, where they have decided that the kids are going to read, in class, with a ruler on the page marking where they are, sliding it down. Like they're back in some 1870s boarding school for the not-too-bright.

I understand that a schools authority might have a list of approved books for the purpose of coursework and that they might allow teachers to introduce a few enrichment sources in, at their discretion and subject to the usual rules of decency. To have an exclusive list is very sinister.

The biggest irony behind all the manufactured moral outrage that is leading all these books being banned and teachers getting fired for reading to students is the ones driving this moral panic are the likes of Gaetz who was paying for sex with under age prostitutes or Boebert (granny at 36) caught jerking off her bf in a theater full of kids, to name but two. The politicians getting this stuff passed don't follow the strict moralizing they impose on others, they do it to engender hate and fear cos hate and fear keeps getting them elected.

To have an exclusive list is very sinister. Places like Texas, where thus teacher was fired, and Flotida, where the law says you can go to jail for teaching actual history, do indeed have very restrictive rules and lists of approved books and, as seen in this article, you can loose your job if you don't stick to them Yes it is worrisome, but the political right in the US at present is very authoritarian.

That is an absolute shocker. Utterly grim. Kids too. Makes you wonder what else they'll find out.
