Ages ago I worked for BP, crushing core samples rocks for mineral analysis. The was one machine called the rolls crusher that was like heavy steel mangle driven by an electric motor. It had to be cleaned between each sample using a home made wire brush affair that you pushed against the rollers while they were spinning. Normally there was a small hopper that you pushed the sample into but you had to lift that out the way to clean it. This bloke was careless one time (he was a heavy drinker and used to come in shaking with the DTs sometimes) and caught the first joint of his middle finger and the tip of his ring finger in the rollers. It just mashed them beyond repair. While it was his own fault up to a point (we'd all cleaned it 100s of times safely) it wasn't a great system either. It changed of course. As far as I can remember there was no real comeback for BP. That reminds me of a conversation I had with the (then-) wife of a friend who was a hand surgeon in the US northeast. She said that she had much more work in winter and it was almost always because of snowblowers. No matter how often they're told, people still seem to think that when the snowblower chute gets clogged and needs to be cleared out that the best way to do it is with their hands. Ha! A previous medic boss of mine trained as an anaesthetist and did a year's elective in Kentucky. Said he saw loads of agricultural accidents where the farmers would come in with missing fingers and hands from the machinery.

I did the dressings on a bloke who'd made a mess of his hand by clearing the grass out from his electric mover while holding the handle and accidently starting it.

That's not usually fatal, however ....
