I'm not sure sharks are great at nuance.

Tombstoning, another idiot thing I just don't get www.bbc.com/news/uk-england-dorset-52867140Tombstoning has continued on Dorset's Jurassic Coast less than 24 hours after three people were seriously hurt jumping 70ft (21m) from a cliff. The casualties were taken to hospital after jumping from Durdle Door at about 16:00 BST on Saturday. The coastguard and police have warned against leaping from the "dangerous" landmark arch into the sea. However, despite warnings and advice to stay away, police said on Sunday some "still saw fit" to attempt it. Dorset Council had closed the roads around the scene for safety reasons but hundreds of people still travelled to the area, police said.

If I remember correctly

Quite. Do you remember the tantrum when someone was blackballed from the In and Out Club? Truth was that neither of them were actually SF or indeed actual soldiers. In fairness NL had by far the stronger claim. That lovely dippy Irish girl on reception probably had more military experience than the pair of them, if only by dint of the number of squaddies she'd banged. Aislin? Nice kid.

Not too bright but a very tidy chassis. I often used to give her a lift home. She made it quite clear that I'd be welcome to come in for coffee on a couple of occasions. That's not the way I roll and, in fairness, I think she was just a bit lonely. She was a nice lass though. I hope she found someone decent.

Totally mental Two European mountaineers embark this week on a bitterly cold, week-long trek to reach base camp on the world's second highest mountain, in a bid to achieve something that no human has ever done before. Romanian Alex Gavan, 38, and Italian Tamara Lunger, 34, are aiming to claim one of the last great challenges in the world of high-altitude mountaineering: the winter summit of K2. They will not be alone. At least 24 others, most of them Europeans, will try to do the same, prompting warnings that too many climbers will be risking their lives on one of the world's deadliest peaks. "It's an extraordinarily rough landscape," Gavan told the BBC in his Bucharest home, surrounded by books and climbing gear. So unforgiving are the conditions on K2, part of the Karakoram Range that straddles the Pakistan-China border, that it has long been referred to as The Savage Mountain. It was a name that stuck after US mountaineer George Bell said of his own attempt in 1953: "It is a savage mountain that tries to kill you." www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-55341778

24 people trying to get up K2 in mid-winter? f**k**g loons. I hope no public money is spent and no lives risked trying to rescue any of these people.
I think there might be benefits to winter climbing, though, from what I recall of reading about Everest - there’s a reason that people climb in the spring window which is that they want some winter conditions without all the winter problems. The ice and snow is more solid, less likely to give way, because it’s so cold, I think, And there’s no risk of monsoon-driven storms.

If it stays true to its reputation, only 6 of those 24 will survive climbing K2.

It should probably be lower given that these are tougher conditions.

"A father and son believe they are the first people to ride non-stop across the channel on electric-powered hydrofoil boards." www.bbc.co.uk/news/av/uk-england-dorset-58282106Silly season story, I suppose, but I wonder about these hydrofoil boards. What's the point exactly? Surely a conventional lifting keel would be more efficient as the stemmed hydrofoil actually has to lift and sustain the load completely out of the water. Dunno, seems like a gimmick to me. I get it when it's something like a moth class sailing dinghy, but not an electrically powered surfboards.
