A dinghy would be safer. Did you see pictures of the little boat they were using? Also, people crossing the Channel in dinghies have better reason to do so. A desire to rape? NURSE!

But irrespective I doubt they would have expected to be in imminent danger. As I said the Vikings managed it. Maybe the reason this crew did it was historical interest. Like the team that tried to recreate the pyramids using what they think were available tools at the time (and failing miserably). I could understand if from the get go it was likely to fail or if they were warned it was not safe and ignored it. I just don’t understand the vitriol for explorers. Or why people get angry at the fact some have to be rescued. The rescuers choose to do so.
