A report by UNESCO has suggested that the default use of female-sounding voice assistants in our smart home gadgets and smartphones perpetuates sexist attitudes towards women.
Why is this a problem? Well, according to the report, the default use of female-sounding voice assistants sends a signal to users that women are "obliging, docile and eager-to-please helpers, available at the touch of a button or with a blunt voice command like ‘hey’ or ‘OK’".
The report also highlights the fact that these voice assistants have "no power of agency beyond what the commander asks of it" and responds to queries "regardless of [the user's] tone or hostility".This sounds like a comedy routine. Should these devices be programmed to tell you to fcuk off if they don't like your tone of voice? I saw a news segment on this and they asked one woman what she thought of it. It's actually the reason women are preferred as signallers in the military. |

I didn't know that.
It wouldn't matter what they did with the voice, someone would take the opportunity to claim that they were being hard done by. That's the name of the game these days. For some folks, life's a perpetual game of Bottom Trumps (oo-err) where points are scored by playing what you perceive is your most disadvantageous characteristic.

It's actually the reason women are preferred as signallers in the military.
But in the military you have to comply with orders.
How can men follow orders if it's a women who tells them, it goes against every fiber of our being (or something like that).

I mod a FB group where this topic came up. While most were like “it’s a costume, from a fictional show, who cares” there were a few that said it was no different to blackface... I can understand why some people see it as bad taste but “meh”. Yes the show / novel depicts a horrendously misogynist dystopian future (it what right-wingers call “paradise”, and it seems a bit flippant to ignore the actual intent to wear a “hot Handmaid” costume but it is still just a fictional show and as I understand it was a viewing party. I mean if they were dressed up as “sexy concentration camp inmates” I could probably get the outrage a little more! And the other hand - it’s the Kardashian clan so any criticism they get is a, ok by me. |
