Not strictly a Darwin award as at 65 he's probably had kids, but for utter stupidity this is up there. A 65-year-old American man who rigged his home with a booby trap to keep out intruders has been killed by the device. Ronald Cyr called police in the town of Van Buren in the state of Maine to say he had been shot. Police found a door had been designed to fire a handgun should anyone attempt to enter. Mr Cyr was taken to hospital but died of his injuries. www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-50619952

I think the Darwin Award is just for stupid people, not stupid people without kids!
That story is excellent though - ha ha ha! Oh dear...

Perhaps a Darwin Award contender that. However, if he's had kids in his lifetime, then the DA's notion of "Cleansing the Gene pool" hasn't really been achieved here, but it's debatable.
I'd surmise that one of the prerequisites of booby-trapping your home is to remember where you set the bloody booby-traps. I'm not yet 65, but I usually forget why I went up- or downstairs - thus far though with no life-limiting consequences.

That's why oldies piss so much... now why did I come up here? Never mind, I'll have a pee while I'm up here.

California shocked to find bill decriminalizing retail theft resulted in… more retail theft"A few years ago, California passed one in a series of bills aimed at emptying the jails and prisons. Proposition 47 carried the disingenuous name of “the Safe Neighborhoods and Schools Act and its stated purpose was to keep non-violent offenders out of jail. To achieve this goal, the state decriminalized a number of lesser offenses, including retail theft. The law raised the value of the amount of merchandise someone could steal while still only being charged with a misdemeanor to nearly one thousand dollars." "To the great surprise of the government, people noticed this change and began taking advantage of it. They have now recorded multiple years of steadily increasing, organized robbery. These plots are known as “mass grab and dash” thefts and they generally involve large numbers of young people all entering a store at the same time, grabbing armfuls of merchandise and dashing back out to their vehicles and hitting the highway. Not only are robberies on the rise, but arrests and prosecutions are down. Who could possibly have predicted this?" hotair.com/archives/jazz-shaw/2019/09/26/california-shocked-find-bill-decriminalizing-retail-theft-resulted-retail-theft/

"A woman has died in Australia while taking part in a contest to eat as many lamingtons as possible. The woman, aged 60, is reported to have had a seizure during the event at a hotel in Hervey Bay, Queensland, to mark Australia Day on Sunday. Contestants had earlier been filmed speed-eating the lamingtons, a traditional sponge cake covered in chocolate and desiccated coconut. She was given CPR at the scene and taken to hospital but later died." www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-australia-51259819

Gluttony isn't one of the seven deadly sins for nuffin'.
Again, if this woman has already produced offspring, then the "cleansing the gene pool" remit of the DA has not been achieved, so the award fails. If she choked childless, then job done. Harsh maybe, but you can't have your cake and eat it.

The pedant in me has to point out that strictly speaking there is no boiling point for chocolate.

Something I read once about chocolate being a mixture of solids, cocoa solids, fats, sugar, so when it melts you do not get a pure liquid but a blend of solids dispersed in liquid that will simply burn rather than boil.

What if you heated it in an oxygen free environment? Wouldn't that stop it burning?

not sure anyone would have tried, though boiling point is defined as the temperature at which the vapour pressure of a liquid equals the environmental pressure surrounding the liquid, I suppose the liquid part of the mixture might boil at some point, if there was no oxygen in the pot, only a heat source, I'm unsure what would happen to the solids.

Melted chocolate is a colloid in much the same way that milk and cream are colloids i.e. there are fine solids (cocoa solids, flavourings etc.) uniformly suspended in a liquid (melted fats e.g. cocoa butter). This is why milk and cream are such great things to melt carefully with chocolate over a hob. On its own over a hob though, chocolate has a tendency to scorch, giving it that burnt taste and grainy mouthfeel, whereas melted slowly over an indirect heat source, separation is unlikely.

I feel that there's going to be an entry on this thread tomorrow for somebody who died trying to boil chocolate.

Vile things lamingtons. whoever designed them needs boiling in chocolate. I agree. Apparently that makes me unAustralian.

The strange town with the name Australian’s insist on mispronouncing.

DeBlasio's no bail required policy is really paying dividends,,,for criminals. Criminals actually going to court rooms to cheer as the judge releases their buddies back to the street without having to post any bail.
