After 20 years of occupation, achieving bugger all but to set the people against each other, Trump has decided to pull troops out of Afghanistan. Well, full marks to the man, but I hope it's done in a calculated way to avoid internecine slaughter. link

Yeah, that's enough blood and treasure expended on that mob. Maybe just let them go extinct now. Them and their grotty, backwards, savage culture.
I suppose that with advanced in Elint and satellite/drone technology it should be possible to police Afghanistan from Nevada, should they start keeping bad company again.

That seems to be the future. Robot wars. Dunno whether it's good or bad tbh.

Yeah. It's funny how people can be thoroughly decent individuals but utter bastards ensemble. I wonder if it's a sort of cowardice and whether that cowardice is the cowardice of the bully, when part of s bigger group, or that of the individual having to be nice when vulnerable.

Like one or two in our community. Meet them alone and they're chummy; meet them with their own group and it can be almost icy.

I wasn't that impressed with Eye In The Sky.
I do concur that we should long since have got out of Afghanistan. There's no nation building going on. So there's no end-game. We're fighting "terrorists", but the terrorists exists partly due to the US presence, and also currently don't get close to threatening us. I'm sure there'll still be the occasional special-ops stuff and we'll be keeping tight intelligence tabs on (and, as Baloo says, a whole lot of drone action is available if we need it). There's little need to a regular presence in Afghanistan, though.

place is a basket case and no amount of western military involvement will make it otherwise. They kill each other either way, and once NATO as a whole has left it will inevitably fall apart and the slaughter on a larger scale will certainly start up again. So why hang around?

Full marks to the man though. None of us should be screwing around in the middle east. Now he can make a breast of it and tell us all about the funding of ISIS.
