The first fcuk up was the Anglo-Afghan War also known by the British as the Disaster in Afghanistan. It was fought between the British Empire and the Emirate of Afghanistan from 1839 to 1842. Incidentally Sherlock Holmes meets Doctor Watson when he's just returned from this war. The second fcuk up was the Russian invasion on 24th December 1979 - they staggered on till the got out in Feb 1989. and then all the recent fcuk ups. Where in the new TV series of the 'modern' Sherlock Holmes ~ he meets Watson on his recent return from Afghanistan. I feel like I say this most weeks on here, but you all should read the fantastic "Return Of A King" by William Dalrymple. You should probably read all his books, actually. But this is the one about Afghanistan.

putin orders beijing joe to grovel,,,the big guy says how much? "Biden Just Blinked Big Time" "But in the meantime, as the NY Post notes, Biden said he would be sending two destroyers to the Black Sea to deliver a message to Putin about not making moves on Ukraine, after Russia had massed thousands of troops on their border with Ukraine." "Putin warned the U.S. to stay away “for their own good.” What did Biden do then? He blinked and decided not to send the ships, an incredibly weak move, making it look like he was caving to Putin, perhaps the worst possible thing he could do. Putin was putting him to the test and he failed it badly." "Now Putin, believing Biden to be all talk and no action, just announced he’s going to close the Kerch Strait, beginning next week until October to block any foreign warships out, including the United States. So if we wanted to help Ukraine through that avenue, now we can’t. An exceedingly bad move by Biden." redstate.com/nick-arama/2021/04/15/biden-just-blinked-big-time-and-putin-already-taking-advantage-of-it-n361980

Going into the Sea of Azov would be stupidity.

Republicans mocking Biden for being soft on Russia after the previous 4 years of the bloke who lied about meetings with the Russians, who never said a bad word about Putin... It's utterly hilarious. Did Trump ever move any military asset anywhere near Russia at any point? Oh no. Did he even offer to support the Ukrainians? Oh no...

Going into the Sea of Azov would be stupidity. Not sure that's an issue. I think the transit of warships into the Black Sea is forbidden by international treaty. I need to check that. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Montreux_Convention_Regarding_the_Regime_of_the_StraitsSort of.

I'd imagine the Bosphorus might be a problem. Erdogan certainly wouldn't like it. But Russian warships are always passing through into the Med so I'd imagine they don't have an exclusive right to passage.

Wasn't always so. They were forever trying to sneak subs into the Med in the 80s. There's quite a bit of interesting kit on the seabed off Gib. I remember my Dad having to fly on Boxing Day one year as the heathen Soviets were not respecting a Bank Holiday.

Checking wiki... it seems a bit confused, Montreux Convention 'n all that. Turkey refusing to change the old agreement to allow passage but as you say, Russia doing pretty much what it wants. Or did.
