It's all a bit weird. My instincts are to blame Cardiff City because their owners are particularly rotten and unpleasant. You're right that Sala wasn't a Really Big Deal - he never even played a single international. And all kinds of players get one or two caps when senior players want a rest.

.... especially in this case as the pilot was not qualified to carry passengers (for payment) in either VFR or IFR conditions. Makes me wonder if there's some sort of workaround for parachutists although I suppose you're not actually transporting them anywhere.
The pilot in this case was a gas fitter who had obviously racked up a shedload of hours on VFR with a parachuting club. Toddling around the circuit on a sunny afternoon is very different to what he was attempting.
Amazing. It'll be fascinating when the full nitty gritty comes out. Apparently, a properly qualified pilot was asked to do the job and declined it.

Here's an example: when that volcano erupted in Iceland a few years ago, a bunch of us were off on a jolly to Palma in a private turboprop job. As we knew that UK airspace was about to be closed, we f**k*d off at wave-top level and didn't even declare our presence until we reached French airspace. Who was flying? A couple of accountants, only one of whom was type-qualified and the other was a glider pilot.

Breaking the law doesn't mean to say it's right, or the norm, or that regulations don't exist. That you and your dad or your drunken mates can flaunt the rules means very little. I'll grant you that there are cunts about who consistently do this, but it nevertheless there are standards which grown-ups are expected to observe. The couple of times I've been up in small planes there was, on one occasion, seemingly interminable rigmarole before we were permitted take-off. That was from Baden Baden, by the way; not France.
