Nobody middle class aspires to be working class. This is just the biggest lie ever. It's not just Van who does it, either. I've had friends who claimed to be working class who parents who were academics. They did so because those parents claimed to be working class because they grew up in northern mining towns. It’s not a lie. I have literally never met or heard of a middle class person “aspiring” to be working class. Never. Not once. None of the wealthy middle class, private school educated, Russell group educated, sons and daughters of doctors, accountants, barristers etc people I used to work with claimed to be working class nor aspired to it. Not one.

That's a pretty depressing outlook. Only if you’re classist and think there is something wrong with being working class.

It’s not a lie. I have literally never met or heard of a middle class person “aspiring” to be working class. Apart from yourself, I presume. I suppose you could just be taking all those middle class people who claim to be working class at their word. Then you wouldn't think that they're middle class in the first place, despite, for example, being ex-pats in professions like accounting, which is about as middle class as it's possible to be.

As in no one, not ever, ever. I have never met somebody born to academics with the associated lifestyle who alleges to be middle class. And never, ever, ever, ever has there ever been a middle class person who "aspires" to be working class. You made that up.

But you have a middle class lifestyle yet claim to be working class, right?

But you have a middle class lifestyle yet claim to be working class, right? If we had a revolution and the Royals had to work at Tescos would we suddenly see them as "working class" or just poor posh people?

exactly is the difference between middle class and working class? That's a hard one to answer these days. I think it's equivalent to what you'd call blue collar and white collar. Traditionally it was about your job, income, where you lived etc but the borders have become a bit fuzzy these days. It's not unusual for working class people to own their own house or for middle class people to not be able to afford it, especially if they're younger. The school system has also changed so that middle and working class children are more likely to mix and a lot more people go to university. The class system doesn't really exist here anymore in the same way that Andy and Voice fantasise about the. It's mostly just about money these days, like anywhere else.

That's what you said. The depressing part is that you're happy to impose your values on everyone else. Consistent, I suppose.

Anyone who says they're working class is a snob.

I'm looking forward to seeing how you to intend to police this enforced plebeian-ism.

I think my mum was middle class. Her dad had a radio and, later on, TV repair and sales shop and also a bike shop. My mum, born in 1933, stayed on at school till she was 16. They also had a car in the 1950s, I've seen the pics. A car. In the 1950s. That all seems pretty middle class. My dad was very much not middle class, hence my dad and my mum's dad really didn't get on to the point we rarely saw my grandad. He was pretty much a stranger to me. Families, eh? Class, eh?

My dad had one of these in the 50s. Pretty similar to the one in the family pics.
