I quite like Leith. I took a long walk down there last time I was in Auld Reekie and had quite a nice curry on my own (the best kind.)

exactly is the difference between middle class and working class? That's a hard one to answer these days. I think it's equivalent to what you'd call blue collar and white collar. Traditionally it was about your job, income, where you lived etc but the borders have become a bit fuzzy these days. It's not unusual for working class people to own their own house or for middle class people to not be able to afford it, especially if they're younger. The school system has also changed so that middle and working class children are more likely to mix and a lot more people go to university. The class system doesn't really exist here anymore in the same way that Andy and Voice fantasise about the. It's mostly just about money these days, like anywhere else. Also with increased automation and a lot of traditional manual labour jobs disappearing, there are "office jobs" which people can see as working class positions (such as call centre workers for example.)

That's in your head. But you seem to see being working class as "depressing" which is rather classist on your part. Nope. That's what you said. The depressing part is that you're happy to impose your values on everyone else. Consistent, I suppose. I think you have reading comprehension issues. And you're also incredibly classist. Unless you think it's equally depressing for somebody to say they will always be middle-class / upper-class etc.

I'm looking forward to seeing how you to intend to police this enforced plebeian-ism. "Dear Auntie Van, thank you for the flat cap and the pigeon. Unfortunately, we are not allowed to keep pets at Eton, except for beagle hounds and my whippet, Scargill." You're crazy.

I think it's depressing that you think your class is pre-determined and that freedom to change is undesirable.

Can you quote specifically where I said "class is pre-determined and that freedom to change is undesirable". Those exact words - where are they? Just use the quote function, thanks.

My dad had one of these in the 50s. Did he have very, very long shoes?

I don't think I could become working class. If Ming enterprises founders on a Tsunami of Brexit uncertainty and I wound up an Uber driver I'd still know to fold my lettuce not cut it.

Weird. On my screen that’s not showing the specific words you said. I'm accurately paraphrasing what you said. Argue with that.

Long shoes? You've lost me there mate. Red nose. Hooter. A surprising number of occupants. Poorly secured bodywork. Etc.

Leith's gone a bit upmarket since probably the 80s/90s. It was very much a shithole at one stage, for the most part.

My dad had one of these in the 50's, there was no fuel pump you if it got a bit low on fuel he had to reverce it up hills as the petrol tank was in the back. If he still had it it would probably worth a fortune, though I suppose, to him, getting a car 20 odd year old was a bit like some kid today buying a Panda from the late 80's

Early 30's BSA, very nice.
Quite a luxury to have reverse gear in a 3-wheeler back then!

yeah, he said it was crap on fuel as the carb was between the the twin V cylinder and as it got hotter the fuel evaporated, by the sounds of it his was held together with wire and string.

The Hotchkiss air-cooled V-twin engine certainly ran hot. Compared to todays manufacturing tolerances it seems a miracle anything from back then worked at all. You can smell unburnt petrol vapour a mile off, from most vehicles of that era.
Just occurred to me, BSA, Hotchkiss, Messerschmitt, Heinkel... All arms manufacturers, must have made cars while being bored between wars.
