I must admit to not understading the confusing and convoluted tax rules the gov introduced in 2016, but have to say if I work my usual shift and get $50 an hour, but do overtime and end up with $30 and hour I'm not working overtime.

Fair enough. But you wouldn't be losing money if you did, would you?

I suppose if the rules made the entire shift work out to be $30 an hour rather than just the overtime it's possible I could.

Absolutely fair, but that's because you can't be arsed to work for £30 an hour, not because you can't afford to.

true enough, though how many of us would really say its acceptable to get paid less to do overtime? In my present contract I get paid time and half for OT, so $75 per hour, no way would I do it if I ended up getting only $30 for the OT or even $30ph for the entire shift. Now that I could not afford.

*shrugs*
Without evidence to the contrary I am going to trust people to understand their own financial situation.

*shrugs* I thought I had a point, but didn't. It's weird that you don't think people can see the original....

You've wasted an awful lot of pixels on saying nothing.

In my present contract I get paid time and half for OT, so $75 per hour, no way would I do it if I ended up getting only $30 for the OT or even $30ph for the entire shift. Now that I could not afford. The issue is this. Assume I earn £150k, the NHS pay £30k into my pension. My annual allowance is £40k so no tax. However if I then do £60k of overtime that overtime won't generate further pension contributions. However my earnings are now £210k so my annual allowance is now £10k and so I have overpaid by £20k which triggers an £8k tax bill. So I am effectively paying a 53% marginal rate. I've no idea whether the overtime generates pension contributions or not but in principal that's the issue> laffer curve anyone?

I think she's trolling the NHS. That's a civilian award for non-combatants.

Could it just be that there's more than enough money being spent on the NHS to go round, but the problem is with another, more successful trade union and their cynical, grasping members? www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-64827246

Not really no, as it's easly avoided by giving nurses a decent pay rise and the gov not using very expensive strike breakers.
