So why do you never ever ever shut up about them? You’re very strange.

The UK - a divided country. On the one hand those who are struggling and on the other those who refuse to believe there are those who are struggling. But dinnae worry, the levelling up's soon going to take a different form to the one promised (and forgotten) by the Tories.

They’re ok so that means everybody else must be ok too. Same kind of mindset that thinks the average UK salary is £80k p/a.

It amazes me, the wilful ignorance of some. I have in-laws who think the reality of those struggling to make ends meet is a myth.

The CEBR (Centre for Economics and Business Research) said the “highest earners now enjoy annual pay growth of 10 per cent, while lowest earners see just a 1 per cent rise”.

Consumer price inflation is expected to spike to a 42-year high of 13.3 per cent after October when households face average energy bills of more than £3,500, with a further increase expected in January.

This, btw, is why Truss's impending splurge on tax cuts will not work.
Whether you believe in classical Keynesian spend-your-way-out-of-recession theory or not, a large part of any such Truss giveaway will be spent on debt already accrued; even ignoring the debts that people owe now, increased mortgage payments caused by rises in the base rate, increasing utility bills, future energy-price rises and the economic uncertainty that that causes - all will take their toll on non-food consumer spending.
As someone once said, priming the pump with more cash in the economy only works if the pump is itself not broken. Moreover, if it's recession we're heading for, then we can point to our recent past and give examples of how we've toughed it out successfully; but if it's a depression, then the usual government levers will struggle to work without a root-and-branch rethink of society - economically, politically and structurally.

I'm not sure "toughing it out" is a sensible approach to recessions when we do know that sensible Keynesian spending, on the right things, works.

Yeah, but the likelihood of Thick Lizzy being sensible is vanishing small.

Oh, of course. Lizzy isn't a Keynesian. I'm not sure she's even intelligent enough to explain why she isn't, or even what Keynesnian spending is.
