I think it's fair enough that he's dead, but also fair enough that the police aren't let off the hook for shooting someone that they didn't know at the time was a violent criminal.

The police were not "let off the hook".
The policemen who shot him was tried and found not guilty of murder by the jury who were presented with all the evidence.
And trial by jury is how justice is carried out in the UK.
Maybe trial by newspaper is better - who knows?

Maybe "let 'em off" is the wrong phrase. But the idea that because post facto you found out he was a violent thug your actions become justified is nonsense.

They knew precisely who and what he was. The story is that this was hidden from the public until the end of the trial, although it was pretty bleeding obvious to any rational adult. |
