The smug, self-serving, pious establishment of the patrician Left. QV Brexit. QV the appearance of the word "populist" to describe politics that appeal to the little people, but which aren't acceptable to Guardian readers. www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c72vjlgl4j8oWhat’s wrong with the word when the definition appears to be exactly what you describe? “ Dictionary Definitions from Oxford Languages · Learn more noun noun: populist; plural noun: populists a person, especially a politician, who strives to appeal to ordinary people who feel that their concerns are disregarded by established elite groups. "he ran as a populist on an anti-corruption platform" adjective adjective: populist relating to or characteristic of a political approach that strives to appeal to ordinary people who feel that their concerns are disregarded by established elite groups. "party leaders plan to reprise the populist rhetoric that they used in the tax fight" appealing to or aimed at ordinary people. "it seems their efforts in creating a populist movement for chamber music are paying off"

It's such a fine line between stupid and clever. In the same sense, I suspect, that there's a fine line twixt you and baloo. Feel free to argue which is which.

“Populist” is only sneery if you choose to see it that way.
It’s a fairly neutral term to describe something that “popular” does not quite capture.
It’s weird that some people complain constantly about the “elites” not caring about the concerns of ordinary people….but then also have an issue with a term to describe just that scenario.

Nah, it has overtones, like "white van man" or "people who eat Richmond sausages" or "people who watched ITV".

Shops at Asda. It's definitely sneery when used by the BBC or the Guardian.

Populist definitely has critical overtones to me. But remember that Jeremy Corbyn and Bernie Sanders are also populist. It is definitely about a baser appeal to baser sentiments. It’s not just right wingery. Thatcher was a cunt but not particularly populist. She wasn’t trying simplistic appeals to the poor, whether it’s race baiting or union arguments or trite redistribution.

Torn on where to put this really: "‘Dark oxygen’ in depths of Pacific Ocean could force rethink about origins of life Charged metallic lumps found to produce oxygen in total darkness in process akin to how plants use photosynthesis" www.theguardian.com/environment/article/2024/jul/22/dark-oxygen-in-depths-of-pacific-ocean-could-force-rethink-about-origins-of-lifeAt first, I thought this might be an interesting new discovery, but then my skeptical side got the better of me and I started to wonder if there was an anti-harvesting agenda. The appearance of the article in The Guardian only served to reinforce this, as did the sentence "in process akin to how plants use photosynthesis".

I don’t think you’re thinking of cocaine, man. That’s Hashhead shark. Cocaine shark, I fear, is closer to cocaine bear. Angry and overconfident and a bit fighty.
