No, not a thread devoted to Sir David Attenborough's seminal work, but a place to highlight actual news from around the World which isn't about Westminster, Capitol Hill or Brussels. The news channels at the moment contain very little else apart from spiteful gossip from various seats of government. I don't share the obsession with political squabbles and virtue signalling. It's very, very tedious. So, what's going on in the real World? Nagorno-Karabakh's getting quite kinetic. I'm tired, I was out in the pissing rain and dark last night delivering bottled water, toilet rolls and prodigious quantities of junk food/snacks to fat, pasty lumps in Worthing last night.
Vulnerable? Yeah, to a kick up your arses. I am developing a slightly acid tongue and a somewhat indifferent manner now that I'm de-mob happy.

The number of obese wheezing gits is a worry. Then you see what they're having delivered. Fags, booze, full-fat Coke, endless bags of crisps and sweets.
Fags, though. Honestly!
We're supposed to deliver to the threshold but I do my damnedest to make them come and get it. I just ring and wait .... then I ring again .... then I go back to the van and start the engine ....

I sometimes take this bloke's medicine round to his house. He's not that old, 60s I'd say but he had a stroke and can't walk very well. I sometimes see him tootling about on a motorised cart thing. Anyway, whenever he opens the door, the reek of stale smoke is almost overpowering and his fingers are yellow with nicotine. He's also got a house full of guitars that he can't play any more due to the stroke. Maybe he just thinks "f*ckit, what's the point now". |

The Armenians really are f**k*d. Azerbaijan has oil money and the support of the Turks. Which means that the only open border Armenia has is with Georgia - whose only border bar Azerbaijan is Russia, with whom the Georgians are in continued low-level conflict with over Abkhazia and South Ossetia.
The weird thing, for me, is that the Armenians consider Russia their strongest supporters in this conflict. That has to be a terrifying prospect given that Russia basically wants confusion in the region in order to return to dominant control. And also that Russia has its paws in Azeri oil projects so the Armenians would be fools to rely on any loyalty.

Talking of Azerbaijan, I was recently asked if a young man of our acquaintance could crash at our place for a while as the fighting in that part of the World was getting to be a bit of a worry.
He's a really nice lad. Very clever and decent. Good fun too and likes a drink.
Of course he's welcome. It did make me wonder about whether they have conscription of course ....

The best writing I’ve read on Nagorno Karabakh is the parts from Kapuscinki’s Imperium that cover the Caucasus. But that’s all 25 years old now, There must be other stuff out there. I actually just started to read a book written by an Armenian refugee a few weeks ago, but it’s hard to get past the resentment and the exaggeration of crimes against the Armenians in the 90s, conflating them with the genocide of 1915.
