Suddenly he felt a tap on his shoulder and realised he had completely lost the thread.
Fortunately he had a crowbar handy to force these terrible puns into his post.

Anyway, it’s time to go cycling. Last warm day of the year in Massachusetts, probably (going to max out at around 25C), and it’s just got light enough to ride safely. Golfing today in a last ditch attempt to put in a decent card before the world handicap system comes in. I'm a bit worried my handicap will shoot up to something embarrassing.

Back to work today after 2 weeks loafing around the house, it will be a nice break from Mrs Voice's 'to do list'

Compression tape. That's the answer. Stick enough on until it tightens in the right position. PTFE tape.

And you're right, a new washer would be cheaper and easier.

I think we've had your new system for a year now. It might well mess around with your handicap for the first few rounds, but it should actually work better in the long run. It screwed me because I've been playing from the forward tees, and the new system quickly sorted that out. My hc went up like 3 or 4 points. (It's always embarrassing).

No. It's always better to get as much riding in as you can early, before most people wake up at weekends at start driving like cunts. Even more important is to get off the bike before people start drinking. Lovely 55 miles today. Rode with a massive tailwind to the coast. Pootled around the coast a bit. Then Mrs FA decided to drive out, and pick me up, so we went to a brewery and then I got driven home into the headwind...

And Voice: That is exactly the thing. That is so far beyond my competence level!

We go out twice a week in the evenings for fitness rides, only shortish ones but the long steep climbs round here make sure your working for it, they have paved a few of the old railway lines closed in the 60's, so we take the lanes and back roads to the start points of the new cycle paths then use them to link up a 12 mile route back to the house, that way we are only on the roads for about 4 miles, both our bikes have 1000 lumen fronts and 300 lumen back lights which you need in the lanes as there is no street lighting. Sundays then we do 30 mile lane rides round the vale.

Nice. The repurposed railways round here have generally not been paved - they're packed dirt. Perfectly rideable but not particularly comfortable on my road bike.
I have a little 14 mile loop I'm riding on weekday mornings at the moment. There are no "hills" exactly, but almost none of it is flat, it's all little sharp kickers for a couple of hundred yards that hurt the legs. Then on weekends I usually go for something longer, something between 40 and 70 miles depending on my mood and whether I have to function in the afternoon or evening. Although today I'm doing nothing because the weather was really sh*t until about 20 minutes ago.
The backroads round here are so wooded and shaded that I use lights even in daytime because I'm concerned about not being seen. It's not like San Diego where you're basically always in the sun (and always in a massive shoulder so no cars should be near you anyway).

Do you do road rides only or do you go X-Country?
I have a Ribble CGR for road and gravel and a Cube Acid for downhill brain rattling with the kids and trail riding up the beacons, nice to have a bit of variety.

Very nice. I'm a bit jealous.
I only really ride on roads. I really should get a gravel bike when I have enough money - but I need to find somewhere to put it. I'm never going to be downhilling - that's for people less cowardly than me - but kinda want an mtb for some east trail riding. But that's two new bikes, and I also want to upgrade my road bike. It could be a very expensive year...

It could be a very expensive year... I do the downhill stuff for a bit of fun with my kids, I'm 54 now and I ache in the shoulders and wrists after, and I keep off the really rough stuff, but it's one hell of a blast if a bit unnerving sailing through the air at times lol! I really enjoy riding the mountain trails and hilltops it's a very different experience to road, it's great my wife loves cycling too so it helps justify the purchases. The gravel bike is brilliant as with just a change of tyres it's perfectly workable on the road too, it has a Shimano 105 2x11 groupset on it so it's great climbing the steep hills round here, I know what you mean by expense though, I bought my ribble with the money I was paying for my holiday in Croatia this year, it got cancelled.

Downhill looks totally mental, in summer here Whistler turn over their ski runs to downhill, quite apart from some of the bikes costing 10k plus, the amount of broken bones they see in the medical center far exceeds what they see during ski season.

I can easily believe it, local to me is Bike Park Wales and the Smilog Forest so we have loads of trails to ride, accidents with broken wrists and collar bones are common. The grading system goes Green for novices through Blue - Red - Black and lunatic, I stick to blues and reds , my bikes a hardtail so some of the drop offs and jumps are punishing but it really is an adrenaline rush.

I've seen the hardcore downhillers at all sorts of ski resorts. Whistler, Mammoth, in Innsbruck. They all have this mental armadillo body armour and massive helmets and things, and still manage to f**k themselves up. It's a young, adrenaline-junkie, person's game.

Talking of racing. Everyone remembers Karl Marx but no one remembers his Sister Onya who invented the Starting Pistol.
