The Armenians really are f**k*d. Azerbaijan has oil money and the support of the Turks. Which means that the only open border Armenia has is with Georgia - whose only border bar Azerbaijan is Russia, with whom the Georgians are in continued low-level conflict with over Abkhazia and South Ossetia. The weird thing, for me, is that the Armenians consider Russia their strongest supporters in this conflict. That has to be a terrifying prospect given that Russia basically wants confusion in the region in order to return to dominant control. And also that Russia has its paws in Azeri oil projects so the Armenians would be fools to rely on any loyalty. Well, the Armenians are hardly going to look to the Turks for help. I see that a Turkish F-16 shot down an Armenian Su-22 the other day, allegedly. Bit off their manor, eh?

The drinking is an interesting thing - the Azeris are, of course, Muslims. But my understanding was that they traditionally had been pretty secular and modern and enjoyed a drink and some of the influence of the Soviet era. But the claws of modern, non-secular Turkey, and of Iran, have been pushing some of the less educated Azeris into the arms of the mullahs, the same way that’s happened in some of the Central Asian republics.

Of course, the Armenians have quite a strong lobby in the US. And France, but nobody cares.

True, and I guess that Islam in that part of the muslim World has always been a bit more esoteric, in the manner of Turkish sufhism.

The Turks have both religious and genocide-denial reasons to stick their oars in on the side of the Azeris. It’s not good for Armenia - basically, they’re dependent on the Russians being scared of Turkish dominance in the Caucasus. It’s like Great Game stuff where the actual inhabitants get f**k*d by “great powers” trying to play geopolitical games.

I think it was the conflict there in the mid 80s, same region, probably the same reasons, that was my first incling that Soviet control was far from absolute and the Ruskies were no where near as strong as we'd been constantly told.

I often stand in front of the open fridge waiting for answers. Is it enlightening?

Saqarra, an extensive necropolis located near the ancient Egyptian city of Memphis, is the site of an extraordinary new discovery of well-preserved wood coffins, statuary and burial artifacts. Egypt's Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities hosted a gathering on Saturday to unveil the extent of the Saqqara find. Greg Lewis, New Zealand's ambassador to Egypt, shared a video of experts opening one of the coffins for the first time since it was sealed around 2,500 years ago. www.cnet.com/news/see-mummy-revealed-as-egyptian-coffin-is-opened-for-first-time-in-2500-years/The mystery of the sarcophagus has been unraveled.

Todays task is replacing a garden tap. Should be easy. Unscrew the old one and screw in the new one. But how do I get it upright. I.e 12 to 6. It always tightens up at 9 to 3. I assumed I could just start it at a different angles until eventually I'd get it to tighten upright but it seems there is only one entry point for the thread so it allways tightens at 9 to 3.
Any suggestions?

Have you tried tilting the house over so that the tap ends up at the required angle?

Excellent. I'll give it a whirl. Might tip the CB out of bed.

Perhaps completely strip the thread from both tap and pipe, then glue the tap on at the correct angle with pritt-stick

I have an outdoor tap that needs replacing too, as it happens. Leaks like an old man’s bladder. It’s beyond my abilities but probably too small a job for a handyman.

Compression tape. That's the answer. Stick enough on until it tightens in the right position.

That’s still beyond my abilities. I can’t even find the shut-off valve for the tap. Only for the entire house.

Anyway, it’s time to go cycling. Last warm day of the year in Massachusetts, probably (going to max out at around 25C), and it’s just got light enough to ride safely.
