Hmm. I wonder what potential liability issues they discovered that they wanted to get rid of as quickly as possible

That's what the yooooth would call a 'self own' I believe, saying he wasn't welcome in his own party and all that.
Can the man even become a bigger helmet at this point?

This is kinda cool. Also wild. The Albanian PM is planning on ceding a chunk of his own country to a mystical Sufi order of super tolerant muslims in order to create their own microstate, equivalent to the Vatican. The goal is to promote the more chilled out, less dogmatic, less political kind of islam that exists in lots of the Balkans, and act as a sort of buffer against the nuttier muslims from further east who've been becoming increasingly dominant and intolerant. www.euronews.com/2024/09/21/albania-plans-to-create-sovereign-micro-state-for-sufi-muslim-order

Interesting. A sort of formalisation of Islam would be a good thing. That doses seem to have been a bit of a block to good interfaith relations.

I don't think this would be a formalisation of anything except a particular, more liberal, branch of Sufi Islam.

That's true. I can't see it flying with Team Saudi or Team Tehran. Maybe it'll form a convenient cadre for a sort of EU-friendly, culturally Islamic, MCC-tie. "Good" Muslims that you needn't be too frightened to share an office with. That sort of thing.

"Good" Muslims that you needn't be too frightened to share an office with. That sort of thing. I suspect that many people don't so much see "Good Muslims" as they do "Good People", in much the same way as they don't see "Good" Baptists, Catholics, Hindus, Jews, Protestants, Sikhs or followers of His Divine Coconutship. A small sample size maybe, but two of my staff, who are both Muslim, are just good people regardless of their belief ... - They are both very hard workers - They both have a great sense of humour (which - yes baloo - they need in order to work with me) - They are both fantastic team players who get on with everyone else in the department - no exceptions - They are both very good scientists who communicate very well (this combination can be quite rare!) - They interact extremely well alongside folks of other faiths (and none) So as we discussed the other day, I'll be well 'appy to just look upon people as people and treat them with respect accordingly; after all, as that T-shirt says, "Science doesn't care what you believe" - and amen to that (if you'll please excuse the pun).

It's funny about tolerance of muslims of certain things. I've been listening to lots of history of Ottomans and Mughals and Caliphs and Persians and all sorts recently and loads of them were dissolute old drunks. The sobriety thing, like many of the other tenets of modern Islam, don't seem to be backed by most of history. Other things - particularly the harem, treatment of women, keeping of slaves, all that sh*t - are horrific.
Also interesting, and I never knew this, Sufism sort of sits between Shia and Sunni. It's neither one nor the other and is sort of both and is sort of accepted by both, even if it's generally a bit more chilled out than both.

I've been to the museum/shrine or whatever it was in Turkey where Sufi-ism started. It was all whirling dervishes and the like. They also had real genuine hairs from Mohammed's beard and real genuine Mohammed footprints on bits of rock. He had huge feet and was clearly very heavy.
