I'd have thought a massive afro would slow you down in the water. Which is why the ban on caps that fit Afro hair make no sense. But people still continue to see Afro hair as “other” instead of just normal hair that grows out of people’s heads.

I agree with this but sports governing bodies are generally beauracrats who try to control everything to make sure no one gets any kind of advantage through equipment. You probably recall the body suit debate a couple of years ago, It would be far more reasonable to me to believe they won't allow different equipment to be used untill it's been reviwed, rather than jumping straight to racism!

You probably recall the body suit debate a couple of years ago, It would be far more reasonable to me to believe they won't allow different equipment to be used untill it's been reviwed, rather than jumping straight to racism! To repeat though - there is no advantage to this cap, if anything it would be a disadvantage. The problem is the people making this decision live in a bubble. Which they basically admitted to when they stated they were not aware of anyone that require this type of swim cap. And it’s not jumping to racism. It is racism. The probably with you is unless they are literally using the N word you don’t see racism. If a policy is made that intentionally (or even unintentionally) disadvantages or discriminated against a racial group, then it’s a racist policy. I would not say that they deliberately wanted to put black swimmers with an Afro at a disadvantage. But they have done, so that makes it racist. Racially discriminatory policy. Have a read on indirect discrimination: “ www.citizensadvice.org.uk/law-and-courts/discrimination/what-are-the-different-types-of-discrimination/indirect-discrimination/

If the cap has been tested then I assume the results are available?

If the cap has been tested then I assume the results are available? A cap that does not “follow the form of the head” is less aero dynamic not more - making it a disadvantage not an advantage. Their decision was not based on thinking it was an advantage but that to their knowledge nobody required such a cap. Did you not actually read the story before commenting? www.google.com.au/amp/s/amp.theguardian.com/sport/2021/jul/02/swimming-caps-for-natural-black-hair-ruled-out-of-olympic-games-alice-dearing“ The body said the caps did not fit “the natural form of the head” and to their “best knowledge the athletes competing at the international events never used, neither require … caps of such size and configuration”. “ The original swimming cap, designed by Speedo 50, was created to prevent Caucasian hair from flowing into the face when swimming. Obe said the caps did not work for afro hair, which “grows up and defies gravity”. Your comments are fairly nonsensical. Essentially this is a swimming cap in a larger size for people whose hair cannot fit under smaller Speedo caps. Do you also think making swimming suits in bigger sizes for bigger people give an advantage?

I know you are obsessed with black people but how have you brought them into the topic of a vaccine done on a subject about sports? “ Celebrities including actors and pop stars are fronting a video campaign urging people to get their Covid jab. It sees West End and Emmerdale actress Sandra Marvin and Nicola Roberts, of Girls Aloud, perform The Rhythm Of Life, from 1966 musical Sweet Charity. They are joined by actors Sir Derek Jacobi, Sex Education's Asa Butterfield and comedian David Walliams. A tap-dancing Jim Broadbent concludes the song, saying "just get a vaccination".”

Maybe pointy cyclist helmets should be banned too.

They should just have swimsuits and swim hats in multiple sizes. Very very simple solution.

Kejai Terrelonge, 17, told Radio 1 Newsbeat that hair-care is one of many barriers she's faced as a black swimmer." Wow. What a pussy.

It's a racist ruling from FINA.
But... I have a very strong suspicion that Soul Cap might have done what they could to manufacture this outrage and publicise it as much as they possibly could - nobody in the Olympics is going to be wearing a swim cap that slows them down (which is why it's idiotic and racist of FINA to rule against it) - but now everybody knows about a swim cap that's less bad for swimmers with big hair

Its a very odd ruling, I'll give you that. I'm not an expert but I cannot conceive of an advantage to be gained by trapping a large volume of hair in a watertight envelope.

A decision not to allow swimming caps designed for afro hair at international competitions - such as Tokyo 2020 - could be reconsidered, after backlash.
Soul Cap said Fina, the water sports world governing body, had told them the hats aren't suitable because they don't follow "the natural form of the head".
The comments sparked criticism from many swimmers with some saying it would discourage black people from the sport.
Fina now says it's "reviewing the situation" regarding the products.
In a statement, it said it understood "the importance of inclusivity and representation".
"Fina is committed to ensuring that all aquatics athletes have access to appropriate swimwear for competition where this swimwear does not confer a competitive advantage," it added.
It said it would speak to Soul Cap about using the hats at Fina's development centres, which train swimmers around the world.
Well I'm glad they listened to me.
